Hi guys I hope I'm posting in the right place but I need help with regard to wheels. A friend of mine is starting with cycling but he is a big guy, almost 140kg what road bike wheel will hold his weight!

We had 105 wheels but it buckled today after a small encounter with the pavement

To be honest I doubt very much if ksyriums will do the job.

140kg is heavy. IMO get someone like Johan Borman to build him a 36 hole wheel, on a standard hub using a Mavic Open pro sup rim and DT or sapim double butted spokes.

This way the wheel can be laced for optimum strength.

Seriously guys, there is no way that a standard Mavic wheel will be strong enough. Agree with above poster, you will need to have to get a reputable wheel builder to build him a strong 36 spoke wheelset

Have similar question re mtb wheel for heavy guy.

Buckled a WT MTB i19 Frequency rim today at Jonkers, wheel buckled when he went over handlebars at slow speed.

Which are best wheels or should he get custom wheels made up?

If you talking 29er, my brother in law is around the 110kg mark with some serious power, he runs stans Arch Ex rims with no hassles.

If you talking 26 inch, Mavic XC717 rim is awesome. Had a pair built on XT hubs with double butted DT spokes, loved them. Bike was stolen 2 years ago. But a brilliant wheelset

A well built set of 32hole rims on road or mtb hubs will last for years.

Was your friend on a 29er?

Get a set of Giant P-XC 2 rims. I rode on these when I weighed 150kgs and they did not even go out of true... Theyre for sale quite a lot on the hub for about R2500 - R2800 or so. Very good DT Swiss made wheels.

I have ksyriums and im 125 kilos and have no issues. My brother thats in the high 140s have borrowed my bike a few times no problems.

On my MTB I have the standard Giant wheels, XTC 0 29er also no problems.
