DJuice Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Thank you Cpt. Was still holding on to my 2007 Sworks Epic 26er.In the Northern Cape we have no climbs, just plan flat, not to much technical, we have a few km's of build up track, but on the districts roads I just can't keep up with 29ers.
(Deon) Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 IwanI would appreciate your input. Following your Vipa build from the beginning. I like to Vipa, can get a Vipa with budget build, affraid it will not do the bike justice, would like to hear what you think?Meduim frame, monarch shockRock Shox Reba RLX9 rear derailleurX7 front derailleurX7 shiftersAvid elixir 3 brakesZtr arch rim with X9 hubsPG 1030 casetteMomsen finishing kit, doubt the nice carbon bar and downer stemI have no idea what the bike will weight, hoping for below 12kg Much appreciated.Agree with Mayhem. SRAM stuff all seems to work really well. I have had X7, 9 and 0 in my time of riding and the real bummer I found each time when upgrading was that I could hardly feel the performance difference. Weight is also so close, makes me wonder if the price is worth the look. To get that weight, choose your tyres carefully, in time spend a bit more on the cassette and go 1x10. Great choice going Vipa btw..
DJuice Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Thanks Pain or ShineIt is a call between Vipa and Cube AMS 100 race.I have only seen one 1x10 in our region, but I am thinking of doing it.It is flat, think you will be running out of gears, got stuck on my 44 big ring and did hole race, ups, downs, straights in that gear.Thinking 34/36( not sure if you get 36) for NC and 32 for rest of country.

DJuice Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Namib, dankie vir advies en praktiese ondervinding. Jou Vipa het omtrent n verandering ondergaan! Lyk awesome!!! Geniet hom.

The only thing I would change in your build will be the X9 hubs. They are durable, but engagement is too slow for my liking. On district roads it will be less of an issue as you will be pedalling most of time. Rest of it will last forever and you will have to spend A LOT more to feel a significant difference. You have chosen wisely! Racing Ralphs should do for your riding. Go with TLR Snakeskin 2.25 front with a narrower tyre out back. They are light and fast. Welcome to the Vipa club.
DJuice Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Thanks Iwan. Appreciate your input.Read reviews about X9, all complaining about engagement...do not exactly know what they mean by engagement, not to techical minded. Is it transferring power from chain to casette to hub after freewheeling and then powering again?
Iwan Kemp Posted May 10, 2014 Author Posted May 10, 2014 The more points of engagement, the faster the hub catches when you pedal. For example: on low engagement hubs it will feel like there is more slack in the freehub, meaning your pedal stroke will move farther before the "drive" of the hub will catch and start totating the wheel.. High engagement hubs have less "slack" and you will begin to move sooner.
Iwan Kemp Posted May 10, 2014 Author Posted May 10, 2014 Only really an issue on first pedal stroke. So if you're not doing technical riding where you need to pedal in tricky situations, pedal out of tight corners to pick up speed again often or do lots of long manuals you'll be okay.
Carmichael Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Which one of the current vipa owners are waiting for the new vipa and then selling his old one? I will buy his old one. Large! Thanks hehehe
Iwan Kemp Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 I have a 60mm on mine with their Up / Down bar and its a perfect combo. Stem is stiff (haven't felt any flex even when standing and working the bar hard), but still light. It's a work of art too. Looks almost cnc'ed.
DeFconOK Posted May 14, 2014 Posted May 14, 2014 Any body built a Vipa with a XX1 crank. 34t Chainring seems to run badly close to the rear triangle?? And Where can i find torque specs for the pivots??
