Because when you hoot at someone, they immediately think "Oh, damn, my bad, I really should drive a lot better, thanks buddy!". The natural human reaction is to become obnoxious and you're going to get the same result from yelling at people with no helmet. You're really only venting your own frustration, not trying to improve the situation.

So what should we do? Just ignore it? Bullsh*t. If you saw someone breaking any other law, you saying you're not going to stop?

Remember, society will decay when we all stop caring. So shout EVERY TIME. hoot EVERY TIME. keep doing it. It's never a waste.

+1

And teach your kids.

My kids know: no helmet, no ride.

It will carry through, NEVER stop caring, even if it means shouting at a tonsil

Never said you should do nothing, rather try figure out a more persuasive approach. Yelling at people, like hooting, accomplishes nothing other than aggressively venting your own anger.

So what would you suggest?

Force the person to pull over for a chat? Yeah that'll turnout less aggressive.

The point is to make that person know that their misdeed has been seen and reminded it is wrong. That why I hoot at people who don't indicate, cyclists who ride through red robots, and anyone else being a tool gets told so. And I hope they will should I be the offender.

Can't stop cause someone will get upset. They need to grow up and take responsibility for their actions.

Well, none of those people now think they should change their driving style. They all went home thinking some a-hole hooted at them.

You want to change something, start a campaign, think of something a little less slacktivism than hooting.

Yeah sure thanks champ.

You go ahead and stop giving a crap. I'll keep doing what I do cause at least I can go home with a clean conscience.

Ever had puppies? Or children? You punish in the moment so they know what they did wrong. Not 4 days later with a Facebook petition.

Anyway, I better get some sleep. Lots of hooting to be done tomorrow! As a rep I get to drive about 1000km per week so I see a lot of assholes who both break rules, and a lot more who let them.

Yeah, each time my kid does something wrong I'm going to blast her with a foghorn, bound to work way better than explaining things to her. You go out there and change the world, though, buddy. One impotent hoot at a time. I'll go back to the campaign I began working on with the DOT since last year.

Not sure what the BIG issue is?

Yes I ride with a helmet and I know they protect your noggin but for my entire childhood I wore no helmet and for a good while after did not either, no one did.

Life in general is dangerous, many other things that can kill maim or severely hurt a human that we encounter in our daily lives that no amount of helmets or anything can help prevent.

If the rider feels like playing higher risks poker let him be!!

But then again if the rule to ride is wear a helmet in a location then the fellow needs to comply.

There is a non negotiable rule in our house. You do not leave this yard on your bike without your lid on. NOT NEGOTIABLE.

In my house too, which is why my son doesnt ride his bike at all, but its his loss.

How about complimenting them on their hair? (that is clearly visible and still stylish, due to the absence of a helmet).

If needs be, stop them and say "oh my! What product do you use. Your hair looks fantastic! Mine on the other hand looks flat and lifeless thanks to this helmet"

Ok, so I'm being a little facetious... but point being, there is ALWAYS a better way to reprove someone.

Just yesterday I acted like a... what's the word... TONSIL when I shouted at a guy coming up a jump line while I was doing a jump run. There was an alternative line running parallell to the jumps. I shouted at him to use that trail and read the signs because riding up the jump line while someone is jumping is extremely dangerous.

I felt like an idiot after. I think we both did and that doesn't accomplish much in the way of enjoying one's ride. I could have done it a lot better. Calmer.

If that guy happens to read this, I appologise. The way I did it was outta line about you being on the wrong line, haha!

and to all others...

DON'T RIDE UP THE DAMN JUMP LINES!!

hahaha, just kidding, but pleeease don't!

I struggle to understand that people still ask for medical proof that a helmet does improve your chances of survival/ minimizes injury. Yes, it won't protect your leg or your collarbone.

But hit the curb with your skull and then do it without helmet. Simple as that, and the kid that died in my town could have still been around, maybe, maybe not. Another thought - when riding a motorbike, why bothering with wearing a helmet?! If you hit that truck, what is the helmet going to do? So the same principle should apply to complete the theory.

Etiquette and safety guidelines for cycling are clear.

It's his or her personal choice.

I don't believe have the right to suggest to a complete stranger to wear a lid.

A buddy yeah. Or acquaintance.

It does not endanger me.

The only possible argument I see for enforcing helmets is if the person becomes the responsibility of the state due to a lack of personal medical cover/finances ie brain damaged or so forth, then it your and my taxes paying for something that might well have been avoided if a helmet was worn.

When I started riding way back in the day that dinosaurs roamed the earth, hardly anyone used a helmet. And if you did, it was nothing more than a piece of leather, which I still to this day cannot see how it would help you in a fall. Looking back its hard to believe just how fortunate I was to have never had a bad accident. In the early 1990's the UCI even tried enforcing a mandatory hard-shell helmet law for professional riders, only to have the pro's pull a COSATU move and stage a protest. The UCI relented and allowed them to ride 'sans casque' and agreed it was pro choice. Then Fabio Casartelli was killed and more riders decided on ignoring the traditional image of the sport and started to wear helmets.

The sport has come a long way, and I personally believe in never riding without a helmet. Its just foolish. However with all due respect to the person who started this thread, calling someone a tonsil or starting a thread about their stupidity is a little harsh. So much hostility for something that could be so easily diffused. Consider this helmetless tonsil's point of view for a second, he knows he's not wearing a helmet, and maybe, just maybe he would listen to reason. But the second he gets screamed at, of course he's going to take offence. Maybe he gets a rise out of upsetting people?! My point is, you can shout all you want, but eventually he will see the error of his ways and decide for himself.

And as for all this 'hooting' and shouting at people, I agree it just adds to the anger and misery on the roads. Anyone who gets 'hooted' at is going to be offended, and as stated nobody will, in that moment accept and agree that they were at fault. Quite the contrary, they will be angered. And angry people make bad choices. My pet peeve in life is a parent who allows their child to stand on the front seat of the car while they are driving. It simply makes no sense to me how a parent could allow their child to be so unprotected. But chances are if I were to hoot and startle the parent, they may just brake hard and make their child a missile. Once again, my point is simply this, yes they are in the wrong, but approach them in a respectful manner. (They may not deserve it) You catch more flies with honey than Vinegar!

Original poster, I am not looking for a fight with you, just trying to suggest a more peacefull resolution! I applaud your desire to make a difference, we need more people with a desire to change. But maybe lets try do it with less hostility?

too much aggro here.. - too many roadies turning to MTB... :w00t:

But I agree - no helmet, no ride. It's selfish to those who have to clean up, to your family/ friends, to yourself.
