There is a time and place, but not wearing a helmet at a bike park is not one of them.

Agreed. If the sign says NO HELMET NO RIDE then on with the lid. In fact wherever our decisions affect other people we should be doing "the right thing".

I understand your concerns, but IMO riding without a helmet is not in the same category as littering / driving irresponsibly.

That is an interesting european thing. Nobody wears helmets in europe.

Over there it feels natural to ride around helmetless - over here in SA it feels like I'm riding naked. I think thats why I cruise the hood helmetless sometimes. It feels free. Definitely not the safest thing to do but sometimes in life you gotta put fun before safety.

Hell if we put safety before fun we wouldn't ride bikes.

Back to that risk versus reward thing :-)

So this morning a Tonsil decides to MTB at Modderfontein without a Helmet.

After the guy parked next to me yelled at him "Helmet" We all just got dirty looks and off he went.

All we need is for him to smack his head or worse and there goes our modderfontein riding venue......

WEAR A HELMET TONSIL!!!!\

Rant over...

Otherwise I Had a nice ride at Modders this morning.......

Thick headed people don't have as much of a necessity as the rest of us normal, delicate-skulled folk.

I remember there was a whole TED talk + hub discussion about this. Not sure where the thread is, but here's the content:

Dunno about the rest of Europe, but here in Switz its not law, there is a movement trying to make it compulsory for people < 17 to wear helmets. The biggest opposition to mandatory helmet laws is that it will make cycling less popular.....

My opinion (which I think I've stated a lot here!) is NO NANNY STATE! Give people the right to choose - it allows Darwin to do his job ;-)

People aren't dying in their droves in europe so why change the law? It's silly.

Oddly enough I agree with the <17 thing but good luck to the police in enforcing that one!

Agree that its ultimately you that has the decision, but for mtb and raod events / races, yes for the no helmet, no ride rule.

But seeing no0bs at Groenies sans head protection scares me, you can inadvertently headbutt a rock so easily there.

They should make it optional.....your choice, but you must sign an agreement, if you fall, and bleed from your head, no one must/should help you, you accept to be left for dead.

It was your choice to be stupid to start with.

one has to ask yourself the question if you stumble upon a guy at say groenies, lying bleeding from the pip without a helmet

is it a suicide attempt?? should grant him his wish, and leave him to bleed out,, or should i let evolution take its course

There was on one of the many threads like this some mention of how a venue's insurance can be voided if just one person is riding without a helmet. Maybe one of the hub's legal eagles can tell us more about this.
