The shoes are for my girlfriend that just bought a bike, I am supplying the shoes. Tried on the first ascent ones but so far the maxed were more comfortable. Still looking though. I have used answer, adidas and northwave( my favourite). Saw these, they didn't look to bad and was wondering.

Thanks for the feedback

" American components, Russian components. . All made in taiwan!"

Just keep in mind that what is comfortable for you may not be for her as you most likely have broader feet than her.

I have the Olympics and so far they are lasting very well. Only complaint is that the soles don't grip at all on rocks when you have to carry bikes over big rocks.

There is an easier way to save you shoes, get a 29er, then you will be able to ride over the big rocks!

Seven of my riding mates have been using them for the past 3 months... Have not heard any complaints from any of them.

As a novice I bought the Mr Prices spinning tackie which has the holes underneath for the cleats. Used them for ages with no issues except that they are a bitch to dry, bonus is that they are comfortable to walk in with lots of grip and if your girlfriend is new to cycling she may walk a wee bit.

Hi - Just seen your post. Hopefully my comments / inputs not too late.

I shopped around for affordable MTB shoes almost a year ago and ended up buying pair of Mr Price Maxed MTB shoes which I have been using for the best part of a year now and have no complaints about them. I searched the internet and found exactly the same shoes under a different brand name (cant remember the name now) but it seems they are made / branded for Mr Price by that manufacturer so I figured they couldnt be that bad?

The only problem I had with them was that they were really tight in the cleats. This I figured was because the cleats were too deep set in the shoe and I overcame this by simply putting washers underneath the pedals to push them further out. Now they clip in nicely and release like they should (before they were a very tight fit and battled to clip in the cleat and release properly).

I must admit that I have not owned many MTB shoes (only a pair of casual Exus before the Mr Price ones) but I have no complaints with them. Also happy with the grip when you off the bike - thought this would be a problem but it wasnt. Think I would like to upgrade to something more stylish pair for my next pair - so thanks for all the feedback re Olympics / First Ascent.

So - In my opinion, if you dont want to fork out R800 (think the next closely priced shoes - Olympics?) and you looking for entry level shoes - I would say - good value for money so go for it.

Olympics ... seen many years (At least 4 years) usage, daily commuting and mountain biking through all sorts of good and bad weather. Eventually the sole had separated ever so slightly from the upper on a small section. Still exceptionally comfortable and durable. Not the stiffest sole.

Shimano's .... seen many years (At least 5 years) usage, daily commuting and mountain biking through all sorts of good and bad weather. The sole has worn down in places now, but is still working faultlessly. Retention clips have taken serous usage and beatings on rocks, they have recently broken on one of the pivots of the hinge, yet still work and ratchet successfully. Not as comfortable as the Olympics as they are a little narrower. Awesome stiffness in the sole.

Guy what about Giro? it is good? *Planning to buy MTB shoe sometime next month or two.

I just bought a pair of Giro's, the ones with the black and red laces. Been for one hectic ride and considerable amounts of walking with them in Jonkershoek today and they are perfect!

I had Olympics too (for 5 years and still good) but they're much heavier (not that I'm much of a weight-weenie) and the bulky, plastic ridges on the sole are utterly horrible for walking/climbing off the bike - I would not be surprised if someone broke their ankle wearing them!

If you're in Cape Town, pop into Revolution Cycles in town. Those guys have superb client service (as well as quite a few cool other options).

I have a pair of mr price mtb shoes and been using them for past 3 years and today went up tokia and did the loop around silvermine reservoir no problems, but its time to upgrade now as the old faithfulls does not match the new bike :-)

I also bought Mr Price MTB shoes, I am a newbie and have nothing to compare them to but no complaints so far, they have already seen alot of water and mud and the related vigorous washing.

I have been using specialized sport mtb shoes for 4 years. Very comfortable and stiff for a plastic sole. Obviously not as stiff as carbon soles. Been very happy with them but are starting to show signs of wear and tear
