Bad news.... Just chatted to a mate that is up at Saddle and Trout and the water level in the dam is down by about 1,5m..... Wading through the mud to get close enough to cast.... Might need a cheap pair of takkies for the next week....

Pickchahs dudes! Drowning a phone or a camera every now and then is part of flyfishing!

This is what I have been up to today: Tied small ants and parachute Adams for the tricky trout in our Cape mountain streams. Yes, the wings / posts on the Adams are red and green, it's Christmas after all. Will hopefully be able on Monday to show some fish for my troubles .

Btw tying flies is good for recovery after a hard ride!

Pretty place, Hotel Beat on the Smalblaar. Holidaymakers everywhere! I hate it when I find empty beer bottles because I shudder at the thought of where the broken glass is going to end up, so I carted a few out to the closest rubbish bin. At least it's only this time of year. The few rainbows I caught for my effort made me decidedly less grumpy and the Sauvignon Blanc I bought on the way back is already in the fridge!

Hey guys

Where can a beginner go to try out fly fishing? Most likely on a damn/lake type setup.

Ive got rock and surf tackle but I've always been intrigued by fly fishing. I've seen some guided tours go for R2500 plus but that WAAAAYY too expensive.

Any suggestions? Im in Kuilsriver area

Hey DJR,do you fish in the Holsloot river aswell?

Yes I do, or rather, for now I should say I did.

The Holsloot suffered a massive mudslide and flood year before last. The amount of silt and mud that came down the stream changed it completely and just about wiped out the trout fishing. It also allowed huge barbell to get up from the Breede and that wiped out some more trout. It has now cleared and is definitely recovering. Some trout survived and they would have spawned during this past winter. The Holsloot is too cold for barbell so they have moved downstream again, solving that one for now. I think it will take another year or so to recover. I have heard mixed reports from people that went to check it out and have made a little mental note to go "see" for myself. So, yes, I will be fishing it again. It used to be the stream we fished in midsummer when the others get too warm and the fishing get difficult. Because the Holsloot is a tailwater fishery under the Stettynskloof dam, its flow is very constant and its water colder than it would otherwise have been.

It is such a beautiful valley that. Btw, it is worth riding your mountain bike up there and back, but I suppose you know that already. We sometimes stay at Dwarsberg and use it as a base for riding and fishing. Also, my Labrador is from there, so it is almost home to the family.

That is a mouth full and basicly what I wanted to bring to youre attention, but you are way ahead of me.

I have fished in the lower parts on farms as I have heard that the 'Beats' from Dwarsberg upwards to the dam is closed to public.Have heard a few months ago about the Barbel coming upstream and that they have been spotted in the pools just under the dam wall aswell.Glad to hear that they have moved out of the river again.

As for the mudslide, that was a real bummer,we use to go spinning in the dam almost every third weekend, along the dam wall and as far as we could walk along the sides. Now that the road is wiped away we are to lazy to climb the damwall.Tried my hand at fly fishing there, but the trout are to deep and the bass want something that moves.......It could also be that I dont really know what I'm doing.....

Only use that rode for cycling now, really nice too ride through the 'pass' and really good training,we ride it atleast once a month and have been planning to do a night ride sometime witb full moon, when the weather permits it.

Give me a shout when you visit again and might be looking for a riding buddy.

We suffered this morning. Golly, we could see them but no wrangling. Planning to do some bass on fly this evening at groenvlei. I've fished more than cycled this year. My oldie keeps telling the bike is a paper weight this year. Ha! He's right as well.
