What rim options do you have for a fatty frame?

Context: have some family 60 plus in age who live in Noordhoek who are looking to get into cycling. Can't think of a better bike for them to cruise on Noordhoek beach, but they have also entered the Argus. Could you run a 29er rim laced to an appropriate hub wearing slicks and use this as the road wheel set on the same frame?? Can't imagine the fat wheels being all that efficient on the road!

Anyone got some info they've found on this perhaps?

4.0" tyres on a 26" rims have a bigger diameter than a 29r...

You can lace 29r rims to the correct hubs and fit them into these frames without hassle.

OnOne actually sell a NotFat Fatty wheelset, which is a 29r wheelset on the wider fat bike hubs...

As Bogus said, you can also run a 29+ setup but will require a wider than normal 29r rim - 50mm rims are usually used.

Wonder how long it will take someone to put together an adapter and spacer set for a normal wheel set to fit on a fat bike... (Just saw some prices for hope hubs with fat bike width)

A heads up re building these wheels - frame spacing can vary. Most run a 170mm rear, 135mm front (equivalent to normal MTB rear), but some run 150mm rears and some 190mm. The standard of 170/135 seems to be falling into place though.

Another idea would be to build a 29+. These run standard 135/100 MTB spacing but can accept a 3.0" tyre on a 50mm rim. You can then slot in a standard 29r wheelset with 35C tyres for road use. Would give you close to fatty proportions for the beach (without the bulk), yet still allow some MTB riding (with the 3.0" tyres) and with the swop to the 35C wheelset you can do the road races mentioned...

50mm is optimum for 29+.

Surly recommends 35mm rims as a minimum, but guys are running them on their ZTR Flow EXs without any problem.

I'm running my 26+ Dirt Wizards on 32mm rims,. it's awesome

I'm seriously considering fabricating my GT Xizang 9er into a fat bike. Seeing the posts on guys wanting to do the opposite ie. 29er wheels on a fat frame, makes me think that it can be done. I've taken it to my fabricator (he has done work on classic and mx bikes for me) and he reckons no problem! This will only be done next year as we are trying to finish a bike for Day of Champs in Feb, but watch this space! World first Xizang fatty :)

Does he work with titanium, if he doesnt and thinks he can just wing it you gonna end up throwing that frame away

This isn't a Xizang or made from Ti, but it is a GT and follow the process that needs to happen.

I just hope your guys welding is better than this guys.
