So, all you "real mountain bikers" ride long travel dual suspension bicycles with dropper posts wearing baggies hey?

Easy to boost your own ego by breaking down others.. anyway, let me get out of here ... there are "real" mountain bikers with real insecurities on this thread.

as in: "real mountain bikers"

do not wear lycra

do wear baggies

do not shave legs

do greet (each) other(s)

do not ride on the road (they push their bikes when they cross a road)

do this, do that

don't do this, don't do that

et cetera ad nauseum .....

I stand by my statement. Actually I (as a roadie) am more likely to be greeted by a runner than by a "mountain biker"

PS: Why the constant need and desire by mountain bikers to force people into pigeon holes? All it does is to point towards insecurity - inability to deal with diversity! Sadly, mountainbiking has become a bit of a clique thing... you know the new golf! ;)

Anyways, just ride you bicycle(s) and be a decent human being to others - irrespective of mode of training / transport!

You don't need to greet a person, but if someone waves at you, just wave back. I hate it when I great a cyclist (when you are on a tar or dirt road) and that person doesn't respond and it happens more with mountain bikers.

On behalf of the CPT Cycling community I would like to apologize. It sure does happen to me too sometimes.. (Not all the time) Please do not paint all the CPT cyclists with the same brush..

Regards

Returned from a 2 week holiday in the Cape recently. Did road and mtb riding...

Found cyclists in both diciplines very unfriendly and unwilling to even acknowledge you after greeting them. Even on a jeep track riding in opposite directions....

I think it might be good to know where you cycled in Cape Town? Out Stellies way we ussually smile and wave...we sometimes even shout across the road if we see our buddies going past on the other side. But yes in general the cyclist I see in the area where I cycle ussually great.

my rule in life - there are arseholes in any sport, racial group, car brand, city.

Good thing is, that there are also top guys & girls in each of them!

I have been out walking in the Bellville area a couple of months back and all the mountain bikers that passed me, waved and said hallo.

Tokai mountainbikers make the CT roadies seem like the friendlies people on earth. The nicest cyclists in the Cape are the mountain bikers in The Tygerberg and Jonkershoek trails, I love riding out there everyone says hi and offers to help if you have a problem. We once had a guy ride past and ask if we were ok, my partner had cut her knee open, we said yes no problems, 5 min later he had come back down the hill just to make sure we had got going again! faith in humanity restored. In Tokai we would probably have been yelled at for not pulling off the track.

I try and say "Hi", "Morning" or "Howzit" as much as I can but with the amount of cyclists around CPT this time of year it get's ridiculous to greet every single person on a bike, esp if you go for a long ride and have to lift up your hand every 5 min for 4 hours.

Sometimes cyclists needs to take a chill-pill and if a person does not greet it is not personal.

P.S - I do not greet every car driver on my way to work.

Sorry to hear of your experiences. Just keep on greeting and you will find you will have a 50% response ratio.

When cycling wasn't nearly as popular as it is now - back when mountain biking hadn't been invented - we all greeted each other on the road. These days even on a very busy trail like the Spruit, it is habit for me to greet just about everyone. Don't care if I don't get a response anymore.

I generally greet other cyclists, but sometimes I am just out there doing my thing in my own little cycling world and I don't even notice other riders. I'm not being rude if I don't greet, I'm just engrossed in my ride.

I agree with the guys that say there are now too many cyclists on the road to greet everyone. I say hi when passing people (if I can catch my breath) adn if I don't, it's not personal.

It reminds me of my gripe to my GF the other day. About 10 years ago, all Vespa riders used to greet each other (and stop for (m)any breakdowns)...now, no-one seems to greet anymore - there are just too many of 'us'.
