First gripe of 2014 - group of 8-10 riders just breeze thru a stop street in Melkbos this morning, after I had stopped. Quite a few club shirts in evidence. We as cyclists moan about the 1.5m rule etc but club riders blatantly ignore basic rules of the road? If the clubs can't set the standard then what sort of credibility does it give cyclists in general?

You shouldn't have stopped, then you wouldn't have had the need to gripe that they rode away from you

Just saw two MTN Q and two Nuwater PROs head down a one way street... Against the flow.

But it's okay.

It's a quiet Sunday morning in the sleepy town of Durbanville.

Recently seen SO many cyclist jumping red lights and ignoring stop streets in the Southern Suburbs and on the peninsula. Quite a few really experienced looking well kitted out guys.

It is really frustrating as you do so much good work and the blatant disregard of a few who think they are better than the law just ruin it.

The attitude stinks as well because if you catch them and ask politely why all you get is a chuckle and a barage of rude words and hand gestures.

But as 'Dale said, if a few of us do right and look after our own actions, those other few will soon be hit by a car or cause an accident at some point... harsh but fair

I'd feel sorry for the motorist involved in the accident. Imagine the cyclist is killed, even if you have done nothing wrong as the motorist it would be a burden you would have to live with for the rest of your life. I think most of the people who jump red lights and stop streets don't think the serious consciences their action could have and not just on them.

I completely agree... That was kind of the point I was making... There are some who are incapable of seeing the potential severity of their blatant disregard until its too late.

It is sad and more that a little frustrating. On another note, a couple of days ago I saw a very experienced, licensed triathlete/road racer lady human riding in full race position on the tri bars at 45kph down Muizenberg/Lakeside Main road with no Helmet on jumping the old boyes drive exit traffic lights... I was blown away at such stupidity

It was at about 15:00... Not the best time to be riding sonder helmet during the festive season on that road

Crazy, man.

No lid , head down, limited steering control

Just highlights the sheer selfish, arrogant mindset that some people embrace.

No one, not even Judge Dredd (who IS the law) is above the law despite how self important they think they are.

The author of the thread is trying to also highlight the importance of clubs to set an example to the public.

Which club was it?

Can a note be send to its chairman or something? Did you let them know?

eeek. it could of been City CC. we hit a stop street just before 'ou skip' a few seconds before a car coming out of van riebeeckstrand. i was the in the front and there was no time to signal or screetch to a stop, i looked behind and the rest of the bunch sailed thru. i wanted to signal thanks to the motorist but they never passed us so the vehicle must of turned left and drove off in the opposite direction.

btw it is our club policy to stop at red traffic lights - and we do - much to the annoyance of other groups who we come across.

i have just remembered, we changed our starting times and we had a group of about 8 (who didn't read their emails) chasing our main training group along the west coast / dynefontein route. maybe in their haste to catch us they were naughty.

See it every weekend around Centurion. Almost got cancelled a few weeks back coming down the hill into midstream on my bike at a fair speed and two guys on road bikes came straight through the red lights without even looking.

Funny thing is, when a motorist jumps a red light or stop street or doesn't pass a cyclist correctly, then the self same okes get all excited about it. As I have said before, every South African seems to think that the law should apply to everyone except him or her self.
