What is the R45.00 entry used for?

Sanparks. Look - a lot of people think that the R 45 day entry and R 405 annual permit money goes towards the trails. The simple fact is that it doesn't, much like the R 45 day entry & R 405 annual permit for horse riding doesn't go into the trails either. All the money you pay to enter ANY national park, goes into a centralized bank account, controlled by SANParks.

Parks themselves decide where / how to distribute the money, based on the needs of ALL the individual parks themselves. Each park gets a budget that they have to decide what to do with, and the budgets are TIGHT.

Bear in mind that the money that Parks controls has to go towards funding ALL their budgets. That includes poaching, management, labour, upkeep and so on and so forth. We DO have an annual allocation of funds from Parks, which does go back into the trails, but it is not worth mentioning due to its size.

This may, however, change in the future. Parks have seen that Tokai is a money-spinner of NOTE, and that the average income of the users is in the mid to high-income bracket. So - while fees will be increasing in the future, there's a chance that a percentage of the fee will be devoted entirely to the management and betterment of the trail system within Tokai.

So - you pay to enter a national park on anything but foot. That money goes to a central kitty, which goes to places where Parks need additional funding - like in the Kruger, and in other, smaller parks where the foot traffic just isn't enough to maintain profitability without our contributions.

Essentially, you're actually funding the anti-poaching campaigns and the bullets that go into the rangers guns...

What is the R45.00 entry used for?

..and I was waiting for that ;) It is the cost mainly to offset the impact of cycling.. this is on the list for discussion in 2014. It's not a problem to ask it, TMNP are keen to direct part of this income to maintenance but the decision involves Pretoria. I will be making a recommendation though to curb the increases. The trail crew bear quite a lot of flak for the high prices and lack of financial support for what the entry is actually intended. That said, I get satisfaction knowing the money goes to a valid cause but the trails and the riders should not suffer for lack of funds. There has to be a balance.

Oh, 2014 is also the first time in years the Tokai budget has been adjusted, this is due to the environ switching from a plantation to conservancy.. impact is now high on the priorities list and for this, the entry money allocation needs to be relooked.

There is more to this but it gets complicated especially when we talk about how the money is used and the need for several tenders from approved vendors - A topic on it's own and easier to talk about than present in text.

hey, I am just so great that everyone came to the party. I would like to get more involved but we expecting our third boy in March, the one just turned 4 the other is about to turn 3, so it is a bit 'rof' and need to support the wifey. but keen to assist in anyway I can. I see all our little contributions as a huge investment, I still need to ride their with all my sons in the future. Its not the entry fees that is bothering, it is going to be the costs of the bikes. nevermind education policy, should have taken out a bike policy!

Good luck with trail build, I'm sure the rain would have softened up things a bit!

Btw, those gloves are absolutely essential working on the trails. Even with hands as tough as those guys have developed by now, a glove will protect from the inevitable blisters, cuts and scrapes as well as from scorpions and snakes (picking up rocks and dragging logs). Great idea to get them some!

We would also like to donate R400. Many of the clients we coach use Tokai regularly.

We have even in the past used specific routes in Tokai as either XCO training loops and sections for sharpening skills. The upliftment of these trails will benefit all. Thank you to everyone else for the donations too.

Please PM bank account details.

..some more. We go through gloves like milk in Milky lane (if it really is milk??).

You are right, these keyboard hardened fingertips are no match for digging or dragging rocks. The guys laugh at me when I complain about blisters but I see them suffering too ^_^ :P..

Pain, pm bank details pls.

I'll contribute in expectation that there will be nothing but smooth track with no bumps and lumps, and a ski lift to. Cannot possibly expect us to peddle up as well :whistling: :)
