And if you don't have a spare tube and cant re-seat the tire,

try packing grass into the tyre and ride it home carefully like that.

Sure beats pushing the bike.

You need a moer of a lot of grass packed damn tight to be able to ride it, been there done that and pushed home .....

Wondering if the process then 4x4 boys use with lighter fluid and a match might not do the trick.

I am not exactly a pyrotechnic genius and do not need to burn my house down to try the experiment , but there must be someone out there with a love for living dangerously.......... :w00t:

Procedure:

Get GoPro rolling.

25ml of Zippo lighter fluid into "the cavity", one flick of the Bic lighter and bingo!

1. Tyre totally off the rim

2. Tyre on fire around the neck of hapless Bic flicker a la 1984 necklace

3. Cane field on fire

4. Long Walk home

.....on a serious note:

Same procedure as mentioned previously, but make use of some nylon rope to compress the tire's centre section (midline) onto the rim surface. The rope is thus pushing the whole outer circumference of the tire against the rim. This pushes the sidewall and beading outwards while simultaneously decreasing the volume of air needed to inflate the tire. It should seat more easily and prevent you from using to many bombs. Once tire is seated, remove nylon rope and inflate to required pressure.

great idea.. but now we got to carry nylon rope in toolkit as well!...

Not that much, only about 2.5m of the normal type.

Feedback on the tube idea - to much flexibility/elasticity in tube.

Tried nylon strap and worked like the bomb. Strapped tire in tightly, pulled sidewalls out so that beading is close to rim. Used one bomb to seat tire and second to inflate to full pressure (without even removing valve core). Could have used hand pump to inflate tire instead of second bomb.

Hope this helps someday.

don't use a rope..rather use a tie-down strap...much easier!!

I have done it before,

used veld grass and took maybe 10-15min.

Worked well considering.

I had a big sidewall cut and it wouldn't seal and was a good 10km's away from the car.

thanks you for the pic, was wondering what the hell you meant, couldn't for the life of me figure it out from the description.

not going to add much value to this thread over what the guys have already said but for me if i loose all pressure, i tube it and ride home, bombs make too much of a mess with the sealant and honestly if the incident (whatever that may have been ) has caused a complete loss of pressure i am sure the fix is going to burp again so rather not walk. i always carry a spare tube and at least 3 bombs, always seem to be giving them away and not using them myself though  .

Same-same on the bombs

I will pay good money to see you do this with the unseated tyre on the trail.

It can be done fairly easily.

I remove the wheel from the bike so that there is no weight on the tyre. Try to get the trye back to it's original profile (some of the sealants cause the side walls of the tyre to stick), so make sure you get everything unstuck 1st. Then if you have mates around gently push on the tyre (at various points around the rim) so the the bead starts to press against the well in the rim and pump! If necessary put some water on the bead to help lube things up but this is not always necessary.

I've had success like this before so it definitely is possible but it requires some prep & patience to make it happen.

Otherwise just put a tube in there and deal with the mess at home.

Since you are in JHB this will be fairly easily orchestrated and a good excuse to suip some beer

Actually I dont need an excuse, Ill suip anyway....

I will supply:

2 cases of ICE COLD Castle Light 440ml bottles

Some snacks

My wheel from my clown bike

Some mates to assist in the beer consumption

You will supply:

Your bombs or whatever you use to inflate on the trail

Your mates to gently push around the tyre so you can inflate it again.

I will share some beers with your mates because they will need them when theirs run out and the swearing becomes too much.

Do we have a date?

If a compressor is a challenge, this is the reason I make this offer to see how useless I am

Cool lets do it.

So the tyre has to have been fitted to the rim and ridden for a wee bit. Then we break the bead entirely (both sides), then I get to work with a hand pump a reseat the the mofo (no bombs as this'll ruin your sealant ;))!

Sounds like a challenge.

How about next week sometime?

This I have to see....any wheel and tyre?

And by handpump you are talking about a little pompie that you carry with you....not a floor pump
