Gatorskins are awesome, the rim tape needs replacing before the tyres. I use 25C foldable Gatorskins as training and racing tyres now.... I get about 20 000kms per set. GP4000's , I find are a great race tyre, a bit soft for training though.

That said, their car tyres suck, I get 30 000kms out of them if I'm lucky and I drive a MPV..... At R2500 a tyre one would expect them to last a little longer. Maybe the MTB and car tyres share the same production line.

Just moved from Conti Race king to Conti Race King protection(2.2 - 29er) on the rear wheel, only because I keep on getting side wall damage from my poor steering...

I noticed after the first 30km ride, the beading seated well against the Stans rims, but I lost air pressure over night.

Removed the wheel, pumped to 3 bar and gave the sealant in the tyre a good shake around.

Yesterday's 28km ride at 1.5bar was no problem and this morning all sealed and happy!

I have a feeling the sealant needs a few rides to seal the walls of the tyre....

Is there a way, Garf', to establish how old the stock is you're buying.

Rubber products deteriorate on the shelf.

Otherwise, the Conti brand runs strong.

Ze Germans know how to deliver quality.

Gotta love 'generalisations' but anyway here's some X-King non tjoopless (fitted tjoopless) and a Mountain King protection (fitted tjoopless) and as you can see no sidewall leaks and have had no issues so far but each to his own ......

And that SSR is quite hard on tyres in my experience :whistling:

Agreed. I've been running 29er XKings and Racekings tubeless for years. I've had one or two leak through the sidewall a bit during seating but I lose 20-30ml of sealant before all the holes get blocked up.

I don't know. I was wondering about this as well. I am normally a sucker for a specials so I rarely just buy. But the tubbies was "new" as far as I know. But none of the tyres was "stored" after purchase.

You'll be hard pressed to find a grippier tyre than a Xking at the correct pressure, especilly at the front. Of course, it's not as noticeable if you suck at getting thru a corner at speed anyway. I think the 1st 29" Xking protections had some teething problems with leaky sidewalls, but I find the newer ones to be problem free. U do need to top up the sealant every so often, it just vanishes. Though that's probably not just a Conti issue.

If you want to experience the poorest handling along with worst puncture protection available, try a set of Icons. **SPIT**

Just out of interest - where do you buy your GP4000s?

Reason I ask is that the ones I bought overseas had a slightly different feel to ones I bought locally (excluding some I got from BuyCycle a long time back which felt like the UK ones).

I haven't had any problems yet with the local ones, all sets have been pretty good. I do think tyres it's a lot about luck. But when I put them on I thought "I wonder if these were cheap because someone is making Chinese knock offs". Total conspiracy bull on my part, but they just didn't feel or look quite right.

I also know a friend who got them on the same special deal, and one of his blew out on him early on too. Maybe another explanation is that Conti export their seconds to us and not the 1st quality ones Edit: - or just that their quality is dropping!

Edit2: looks like I'm not the only one who wondered about a batch:

Guess it's just how some of them look

I got them from a LBS.

I have been reviewing different brands, but then I wonder how good they will be in comparison to the 4000s; I have been using them for many years and have absolutely no reason to use another brand. I am really happy with the contis

My opinion is that the Germans build awesome brakes but not MTB tyres. I hated my non- round heavy Conti's. My previous LBS could not seal the front tyre due a hole (brand new tyre) and then put a tube in to solve the problem. Only when i punctured did i see what the buggers had done...very unethical..

If I remember correctly, car tyres have batch numbers or date of manufacture on their sidewalls. Surely bike tyres too?

Agreed!

I'd rather go get a makro special tyre and put tubes in for more peace of mind

Absolute k@k tyres of the highest order in my experience
