Ride for Sight littering

I have always wondered why MTB events don't make guys write their race numbers on the food wrappers.

Random checks at the start to collect food that doesn't have a number on it. Guys will get into the spirit of labeling and keeping their junk. Instead we all have to listen to the race organizers begging people not to litter and how it threatens the use of the courses we love to ride.

When I race I put keys and cellphone in left pocket, middle open and right goes energy gels/.banana's etc remains moved to middle pocket when consumed.

Not only in races but places like Suikerbosrand this can be an issue where riders would discard their rubbish only for the animals to feed on it. I once caught a guy throwing his punctured tube away, made sure he picked it up again and followed him all the way back to the car park.

I think it's time for all cycling and running races to follow Ironman's policy on littering. Part of the terms and conditions need to be the compliance to no-littering rules

If you litter; red card, ie you are out, DQ-ed. No arguments or excuses, thanks for coming have a safe trip home. I can't understand why it's not policy in all races yet; clearly asking people is not working. I know OMTOM had this policy last year; not sure if they followed through and DQ-ed anyone. (On the other hand, I've seen multiple people disqualified in 5150, 70.3 and Ironman races for littering)

Please elaborate on the point you are trying to make. I want to understand before just assuming you mean one thing and have a go at you because of it.

I am making a statement. Something I have witnessed and asking other contributors. Not sure how I can elaborate more.

Watch the pros on TV and watch how they toss their litter on the road side.

In the one TDF, they were throwing their bottles into a river as they cycled past the river.

I'm also not sure why you would want to have a go at me unless you were one of those riders.

I don't get the point you're trying to make? If it's okay for pro's to do (which it isn't) it should be okay for the rest of us? So as your dog takes a dump in your backyard would it be okay if I came and did the same?

Read it again... Did I say it's alright for the pros to do it?

I merely made an observation of their behavior on TV and documented on this forum.

And no, I am not defending their actions. Nothing pisses me off more than littering. I have had enough fights with people who have littered and given up enough weekends to pick up litter that other idiots have tossed on the ground.

Trust me if I could find their names on the entry list, I would've named and shamed.

But when your own value system is so low that you blatantly and intentionally litter, then probably being named brings no shame. You'll justify it with the excuse so beloved by the morally corrupt: "Everyone does it".

They'll be in your Strava activity with a similar time

You could have elaborated more by stating whether you condone or criticize their actions.

I was asking, because like others, I thought you were trying to justify littering because the pros are doing it. Your post did not say that you dislike or accept their littering. But unlike others, I tried to give you a chance to explain before I engaged you on the topic.

Probably will get some criticism for this, why cant there be more bins at water points i.e. the big ones used in running races?

That will at least make people more aware to chuck their litter properly

Good suggestion actually, and add to that a big X target for people to aim at, at least then the majority of the rubbish is located in one spot for the crew to collect.

Some people grab stuff at the tables and eat while they ride, so maybe consider another target bin station 1 or 2kms down the road.

I have a routine, food/gu or energy bars go in right hand pocket, empty sachets/wrappers go in Left pocket, Keys/cell phone in middle, when I get to the car or Bin I empty the left one.

I think you stole my system and adjusted it for right handed people ????

Few years ago (think 1998 or so) we had corn syrup in bio degrade packets. I could not even toss that out on road races. Only problem was that the packets would degrade before races sometimes. I think it would be cool if USN and the other producers will rather move from shelf time to a environmental better packaging.

It is just like the 94,7 people chucking their water bottles along the route

They now have designated toss zones in races like TDF etc. If the riders are seen throwing outside of those zones they get a financial fine.

EDIT: Only been like this the last 2 odd years though.

Yes, and when bottles are dropped, there's a flurry of people trying to snag them. Oh... aren't the bottles also biodegradable?

I am spoilt and do the majority of my riding in the magnificent Kgaswane reserve in rustenburg. Me and my mates regularly pick up what we find, usually litter left behind from work being done in the reserve. The crowd who ride there are rustig and have a love for the place, I have never seen a mountain biker litter there. Except for banana peels, but they are allowed in my mind.
