Stans Sealant - congealed into big lump

In my case Stans does not last long and dries up, SlimePro on the other hand lasts ages!

you hit nail on the head!!

The Stans "dry" out after a while (something evaporates)...and you are left with that cancerous lump!

My question is - can one prevent this by totally replacing Stand every so often?? And the before you put new Stans in...should one completely clean out the old stuff??  Bit of a laborious schlep, if you ask me...

But i recon - the new Stans liquid will need a surface to congeal onto...and what beter surface than the gunck left behind from the previous round of Stans?

I'm sdefinately going to try the "other" product mentioned in here...

I might be wrong but I dont think what is left in the wheel is still effective. The reason is that there are latex particles in the fluid and I think that the booger/alien is the latex that have solidified in the fluid..

yip...100% correct!

think about it...makes sense!

Speaking of Stans....you gust should see the proliferation of devil thorns here in the winelands at the moment!! WoW!!

I do not know how anyone can last a ride without being tubeless...

Did you just top up? or did you clean out all the old stans?

If you just topped up, then there are already little "brains" (Balls) in the tyre. When you top up it just sticks to these causing a big "brain" (ball). Hope that makes sense.

I have always used Stans - however I wouldn't mind s change > now to change would I have to wash the inside of the tyres first - or can I just put the required amount of Slime Pro in ???

Those boogers are the only drawback of Stans. I usually get them when I had a slow puncture in my tyre, but not for a while.

That is a small drawback for something that seals the punctures fail-proof. I haven't had a puncture with Stans in 3 years now.

The previous Stans Sealant had dried up so I just added new. I did not clean out the layer of dried stuff that was on the surface.

Yeah... Clean it out.

Also, when you get thorns etc sticking through the tires and the sealant bonds around it to seal you start getting lumps inside the wheel. The snowball effect comes to mind here where all the little latex bits eventually catch onto the lumps becoming bigger and attracting/catching more... exponential issue here.....

So, clean out your old stuff, clean out the old bits and bobs and start a fresh.

You might find you need to latex strip a spot or 2 on the inside of the tire but thats cool and easy to do.

Good luck.

Also remember that the sealant with a higher amonia content also starts eating away at your alu rim between where the tire seats and the yellow/gorilla/ghetto tape setup. This causes it to corrode and become rough... Find a sealant with a lower amonia content if you are looking to change.

The Geax sealant is very friendly and doesnt smell like Jik.

I have the same issue with Stans.

Am now trying BAT Seal. http://www.batseal.co.za/

It works a treat. Seals really well and seams to be less of an issue. Also SA made..

Big Als Tire Sealant.....

If you smell it though it still burns the inside of your nostrils. Try finding some GEAX sealant and smell both.

It's not the cold that causes this. Ammonia is used in sealants to keep the latex in liquid form. It's the CO2 reacting with the ammonia in the sealant. There are nitrogen filled bombs out to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

lemme guess, 80 nitrogen, 20% oxygen mix?

I will get flamed for this but here goes;

Stans = crap

I use stuff I get from a car tire place and it works a charm.

Why do you say it is crap?

All the tyres I have Stans in I have never had a puncture. That is about 6000km in almost 3 years of cycling all types of terrain (not just dirt roads). That is a 100% pass rate = cant get better.

I have also never done top-ups, only put new Stans in when I change tyres. So on my current AM that is over 2500km on the 70ml in each front and back tyre without punctures.

I FLY, that looks like a big blob, how many ml did you put in one tyre?

Stan's dropped me with 10km to go the finish on to hell and back 2012 by turning into a ball of rubber and not sealing a small thorn puncture.

Some of my mates swear by it, but one failure was enough for me

At the beginning of January 2014 I replaced the sealant in all our MTB tyres.

During the Dullstroom race my wife complained that her front tyre was fishtailing on the descents.

We stopped and I spun the tyre but it was running true so we carried on.

The next day I opened up the tyre to find this lump of sealant. The bike gets ridden often so it should not have solidified.

Anyone else have a similiar problem?

More common than most people realise.

I have had numerous "booger nuggets", all with Stans.

Have tried the range of sealants, including Caffe Latex, BAT, the water soluble ones, etc, but keep on coming back to Stans.

Warning: Off topic: Keep those nuggets, wash them dry them and post them to me. I have a scheme to spray them with gold lacquer and sell them to the same swine who run the bike scams (Alfred Samuels and co). Maybe we could fund the hub that way?

Or having I been sniffing too much sealant out here on the frontier? ;)
