Stans Sealant - congealed into big lump

I have always used Stans - however I wouldn't mind s change > now to change would I have to wash the inside of the tyres first - or can I just put the required amount of Slime Pro in ???

Im also going to try the Slime Pro stuff. Where can I buy some?

My Stans dries up in 1month of no riding. Thats a problem for me because I have three bikes and dont ride all of them every day.

Why do you say it is crap?

All the tyres I have Stans in I have never had a puncture. That is about 6000km in almost 3 years of cycling all types of terrain (not just dirt roads). That is a 100% pass rate = cant get better.

I have also never done top-ups, only put new Stans in when I change tyres. So on my current AM that is over 2500km on the 70ml in each front and back tyre without punctures.

I FLY, that looks like a big blob, how many ml did you put in one tyre?

Then surely I must do something wrong. My Stans never lasts more then a month. I put 60ml in each tyre.

If my bike stands for a month without riding, then the sealant is gone!

I have only just converted to tubeless (on XT rims) and put around 100mm of Stans in my tyres. After a week I had a puncture that wouldnt seal and when I got back home and removed the tyre the sealant had all but gone! Just some watery liquid and bits of snot remained.

I assumed it was my tyre simply 'absorbing' the liquid (Its a tubeless Bontrager Revolt) but it seems like the sealant dries up/turns into snot pretty quickly then? The tyre on the front still had plenty in it though (Vredenstein Black Panther).

It seems Stan's doesn't like non-tubeless tyres where it has to seal the sidewalls and beads too.

If used in UST tyres it lasts quite long because it's only there to seal punctures. I used it in Maxxis Crossmark's for the past few years and never had a puncture, ever. I change it every six months and there's usually a small lump but also plenty of liquid left.

This is very interesting. .. it seems like it is tyre (the material composite they use) dependent maybe. Maybe we can start writing our tyres down and see if there is some link.

On my XC bike I bought April 2011, rode till March 2012 with same sealant no punctures, over 2000km. Changed tyres to slicks for Argus. Was Maxxis Monorail and Crossmark. Yes there were a bit of solid rubber balls, but more liquid in tyre.

Like I said, current setup on AM, over 2600km, no punctures (incl doing downhill trails). Schwalbe Hans Dampfs front and back.

Let us do this study!

(I'll start drawing up a tyre chart on your replies tomorrow. )

I have also noticed that the Spez Control tires require a bit more when it goes on fresh as it has thin sidewalls. The sidewall seems to absorb a bit as well. The Schwalbe not so much, if you take the snake skin type. But when I put a brand new tire on, I always use about double to triple the amount. The latex seems to have to "coat" the inside of the tire first and that almost takes up a whole 60ml, especially a 29r.

Has anyone tried washing their tires before putting them on to get rid of the mold releasing oil that stays stuck on the rubber? Different manufacturers use different types of oil and that may also cause the stuff to congeal. I am no scientist, just throwing something out there.

Only 2600km?

Have you had a bit of a lay off in the off season?

During the Dullstroom race my wife complained that her front tyre was fishtailing on the descents.

Anyone else have a similiar problem?

Only after 12 draughts or so and going backwards, are you sure she hasnt been watching too much nitro circus to fishtail a front wheel?

   I like your sceintific approach...

Me: Old bike = Conti MK & Race king combo....never measuured Stans qty (but usually ~1.5 cups)...lasted forver! In tact it did dry up after a year or so, when i forgot I had sealsnt in tyres...they were that reliable...

New bike: Swalbe Racing Ralphs Tubeliss ready... no ball formation with Stans, but dried out much much quicker and entire inside was covered in a even layer of latex....

I am known as the laziest cyclist out there!

I mostly just do races (a means to socialize and travel) ^_^ and these days I prefer the ones I dont really have to pedal (Yes I have been told to maybe consider a different sport)

"training" isnt part of my vocabulary
