General No GPS tracking allowed??

When I was reading through the Rules of Cape Epic, there is one rule that I don't understand.

 

14.1

"No rider may track the route via the use of GPS unit or by other means"

 

It's really difficult to understand this rule.

 

Does anyone know the reason for this?

hmm, That does not make sense to me, as they are going to have live GPS tracking this year. Then the whole world will be abel to follow the route.

Live gps tracking for tracking the rider positions stage to stage, yes. But that is on the media side of things, controlled y Epic themselves. They're forbidding GPS tracking devices like garmin etc and from uploading them to the sites so that private land stays just that - private.

Essentially means thou art not upload to Strava / endomondo / garmin etc. Yiu can use it to track speed and time from day to day, but delete it straight afterwards. If the organisers find any epic trails uploaded to the web, they track the perp down and fine them. They also remove the ride from Strava (flag it and get them to remove it) so that nobody else can access it.

So no Garmin, Suunto etc allowed unlike in previous years? I thought most of the Epic routes have been used a couple of times and guys uploaded to Strava etc

You can use them, but you'd better not upload.

If you upload, people will assume it's a legitimate trail. When it's not. And it will be ridden. Ask Cassie what happened to some of the Wannabees trails down here in the cape thanks to an Strava segment created on an epic stage...

Can you upload and just set the ride as "private" and you may not share it on a public forum (garmin, strava, endomondo, ridewithgps, etc)?

Afaik yes. But then it means that you have it saved as a route. Which isn't on. AFAIK they want to rule out the chance of ANYONE riding those trails in their off time, for obvious reasons. Private sessions still allow you to do that. So maybe it's best to say you can track it, but don't upload at all.

Exactly. And you're not allowed to ride the Trails normally either. Therfore do not track or upload. Yes, I know you want to track average power and and and. Just don't upload it. All that matters should be your ride. Not that you put out 250w on day 3 but only 249.75 on day 4

I am nowhere near a good climber, but on BCBR it made my race when I cracked a top 100 on one of the Enduro stages in the race. Something like Strava can stimulate this in an event like the Epic.

I remember that the rule came in around 2008 / 2009 when the Epic had issues where farmers were starting to refuse access due to rogue riding. These days it should be noted that we are spoiled for choice in the western cape and have no reason to trespass. It does still happen though. Ask a certain Swiss rider about a trespassing incident last year just before the Epic.

Then why not have Enduro sections on the public portions of each day's stage. Lets face it Vermaak / Evans use as much as they can from the public trail network. It is not cost efficient to cut new trails every year.

Its private property, don't want riders jumping fences to ride previous epic routes. But they have never checked my gps anyway. Don't stress.
