 texting maybe a bigger problem than DOP

Come to City of Cape Town to see how it's done. Got two fines in two weeks for "using my phone while driving". Both times on GPS using it to navigate, one time the phone on the passanger seat just giving directions. Phone stays in the boot from now on and Garmin Nuvi back in action after that.

The sad reality is that there are not that many concerned cyclists out there who are willing to help create awareness. There are tens of thousands of cyclists out there. You only hear from them when they or someone close to them are involved in an incident. Then all of a sudden something needs to be done and questions are being asked. It's as if some people just live under rocks, it's everyone for themselves. We would like to think we live in a very connected world with the communications technology available to us, but the truth is that only 10% (guesstimate) of it is being used. We think e.g. that the majority of cyclists are on the hub, but the majority have never even heard of it.

If you only look at the cycling related incidents lately, the majority of drivers say they didn't see the cyclists, so they must have been either blind as a bat or on their ******** phones (if not drunk or speeding), it's the only explanation.

I dont agree - there was a great bike safety ad from the Uk with guys playing basketball, and at the end it says - did you see the moonwalking bear? It walks right through the scene but you dont see it as you're looking at the ball.

There are times when we just dont see.

I'll give you another example..

@bicyclesafety tweeted the following yesterday from @justasecond0001 to get @carteblanchetv involved:

"@justasecond0001: Cyclists being knocked over and killed at every opportunity, what would it take for @carteblanchetv to run a story and increase awareness ?"

@bicyclesafetysa has almost 9000 followers,#justasecond over thousand followers, only 85 people retweeted the message with 11 who favorite the tweet and 12 replies.

Nough said, over and out.

Not fair ... I have a twitter account but very rarely access or use it.

Playing basket ball does not endanger lives compared to driving a vehicle on the road. In basketball you concentrate on getting passed your opponent and throwing the ball through the net, driving a car you need to concentrate on road conditions, speed and obstacles, following a "path" to get to point B. What I will agree on is that some people are not attentive to things around them as others, they are the ones we need to watch out for, but it's been used as an excuse all the time, where do we draw the line?

I think the point of the ad is how easy it is to miss something when you're concentrating on something else. Watch it, it's pretty effective.

The vid on YouTube is well worth watching and, as I said, it was a Uk bike safety ad.

Where do we draw the line? Case by case.

There you go. Proof. Not everyone can be on twitter all the time and I'm not blaming them, just an observation ;)

Agreed. Like texting while driving, then hit a cyclist and conveniently state you didn't see the cyclist. No mention of texting while you were driving.

Let me copy and paste my comment on a cycling mail list that we run, where a similar debate is currently running RE the cyclist that was knocked down in Stellenbosch.

I recon the same applies here

The problem ladies and gentleman is not a "cyclist" or "motorist" issue, it is that a vast majority of society has developed zero regard for his/her fellow man.

You want to solve the carnage on our roads and the future of the country?

Well the sure solution is a long term one unfortunately, we need to teach our children, or rather today's children what compassion is and how to respect and value fellow human beings and the planet as a whole actually if we are hoping to improve the situation we are in now.

For today's society, the solution is to look into yourself and make sure you do the best you can to your fellow man, unfortunately this is not a easy lesson to learn if you are not open to anything other than self enrichment or just looking after "numero uno"

Just saying and shooting from the hip and from my keyboard over here ..... Michael Jackson got it right I believe when he composed "Man in the Mirror" .... therein lies world peace.

did they put it in the box, seal it and confiscate it for 24hours?

damn effective technique, really spreads the story.
