  Pissing down buckets in Wellington. Ready to hit the road in 20min

Hope you enjoyed it.  You will feel like a kid again after playing in the mud.

Wolwefontein has awesome single-track. Only did the 42km (44.5km!) not too muddy or slippery at all. Just started bucketing down though.

Edit: where do you start that lovely single track if you come on a normal day?

That was a proper mtb race! Really tough, loads of single tract, I don't know where they found all those trails, extreme rain and mud. And my garmin says 66km.

Now for shower beer and afternoon watching giro. I am in a good mood.

I lost my Rudi projects on the trails if someone found it and return it I would be very gratefull.

Please.

I saw those on the first climb after we left the 42km route. They were no longer in one piece I am afraid .

I was not chuffed, Im no race snake but I can ride, they put me in the last seeded group for the 42km, I spent the whole ride trying make my way around people...other than that I enjoyed the ride

I queried it and they are using SASeeding rankings for this. The only race I have ever done for that index is Darling Brew last year. Came 17th last year but obv now the seeding is carrying penalties and I'm seeded in the 200's somewhere from the entries received

I might just query at registration and hope that my top 20 position in the Amarider 100 miler is enough proof to go up but I don't have high hopes.

Gonna be a looooong day fighting through the field...

Lovely race, well organised as always.

Milky, did I lie to you about this race being a must do?

I DNF today, I packed everything for the race, except my legs. :whistling:  HR was also elevated, ended with an avg HR of 171 for the race, with a max of 183 (for a 50yr old toppie)

Took the last 18 km turn to the venue, ended up with just on 38 km. At least I got to do a good deed for the day, as I was able to stop and help two ladies struggling to fix a flat wheel.

Only two gripes I have, is the relative lack of skill of riders on the ST. Was held up countless times by guys walking sections that was completely ride able. I later on resorting to slowing down completely when I saw guys walking sections, only to ride it myself without problems, as soon as they cleared the section. And I do not rate myself as a "technical fundi".

And then where the routes merged, it was a complete mess from then onwards. Walkers all over the place, really frustrating. Orgs need to look at this for next year, and find an answer.

Other than that, Hats Off to the org.

If you leave Darling on the road towards Yzerfontein / R27 the farm Wolwefontein is on your right a few km down the road. Honesty box at start of trail and I think the longer route is 20 odd km long and includes all the single track the 42 k used today AND some more.

Agree with Wannabe the 18km merging with the long route was chaos mommies and kiddies everywhere.

One concerning thing that organisers need to look into is the local kids. Near the finish they were grabbing at my back pocket for sweets/ cellphones. Dangerous for riders and kids. I was alone and it started to feel unsafe. Also kids tried to send us on wrong route.

Wannabe you should have done the long route (if you ignore the part of your heartrate) - I went REALLY slow (was also struggling with my heartrate) so I was in the mid-bunch of the long route and everybody was riding (maybe not at the speed that those behind them would like but at least they were riding).

You were right though, an awesome race, nice vibe at the finish, nice to have some options for food and not the usual boeries and burgers.
