Ibis Cycles is throwing its hat into the quickly expanding carbon mountain bike wheel market and is doing so with two pairs of hoops it hopes will redefine how we look at wide rims.

The 928 is a 29-inch wheelset with an external rim width of 28mm and an internal rim measurement of 22mm. The 741 is a 27.5-inch wheelset with a whopping 41mm external measurement and a 35mm internal width. The 941 is identical to the 741 in rim-width, but in a 29-inch build.

My little experiment with wider tires on my road bike made all the difference to the ride quality, It turned a harsh carbon frame in to a really comfortable ride. My thoughts were straight away - why not make wider MTB rims?

Simple innovations are often so obvious.

Would these rims have specific tyres, what are the limits?

I don't think so.

Many DHers and dirt jumpers are already running rims nearly that wide. (Eg. Sun Ringle MTX 39's).

The widest I currently have are Spike 35's (35mm external), and I run 2.4" Schwalbe Big Bettys on there

So unless Ibis has some weird bead system or something, I'd imagine that anything from a 2.35" (manufacturer dependent) should be fine

They have no bead system. The rim has smooth edges for added strength apparently

No news on Enduro specific, though...

Heavens no! Did they not even take a glimpse at the forums before heading off to the lab??

Actually, are these being market for XC/Trail? Would be nice to know where they fit in in terms of strength.. I would expect an eyelet'ed version to be next, made and sold specifically for ENDURO ^_^

No bead? Curiouser and curiouser.
