That is the key question.

Please advise on price for hardware & software needed, installation and steaming pricing - how much to watch a rugby game, movie or sitcom episode?

Can I get Dora & Sophia for my daughter too?

If you already have a laptop and an internet connection, you can stream any of the websites via the laptop or connect to the tv for free. Similarly you can install xbmc software for free, is all open source and freely available.

If you want to set up a dedicated media centre for streaming, depends on the level you want to go to and cost increase the better the system you want, for a basic raspberry pi (less than R1000) or Android tv box, around R1000-R1500, the software is free and downloaded off the net, then is just the monthly cost for your uncapped internet, minimum recommended 2mbs and you can stream anything and everything

I use Roku devices on all my tvs in the house, they work like a charm. I have a dedicated server in the study and installed Plex on it then i can stream any movies or series that i have. I also signed up to unotelly and get a lot of channels that can be streamed to any TV such as netflix.

Always happy to spread the good news ....

But been thinking .. after the cr@ppy streams for the big events like PR when the freebie systems cant cope. I would certainly be prepared to pay for a decent pay-per-view legit stream, I hope someone comes to the party.

There's just enough reason to hold on to my DSTV subscription.

Not an excellent service.

But okay.

If I did not watch sports, live and hassle-free, I would probably not have it.

Certainly if you are a football/rugby fan ..

Only team "ball" sport I am really into is Curling and Women's Volleyball

not really a family (read wife and children) friendly setup.

seems quite involved, to manage and set up.

You would be surprised - lots on Youtube. And Flash games for kids

There are a lot of cheap ready-to-play Android media player / home entertainment boxes coming onto the market, which makes this even more attractive no-brainer in terms of apps / games / etc

But for maximum versatility I believe Windows is the best option

For all the content you get, DSTV is not badly priced. But it is still is a lot of money.

Who has time to watch all the content?

My strategy, turn it on and off as needed. Was on for Epic. Will turn off at the end of the month. Back on for July for TDF then off again.

Also fill the PVR with stuff you would like to watch and don't have time. Before you terminate, remove the dish antenna. That way the Smart card does not get turned off and you can watch the PVR for as long as you like.
