Hi Guys - I have ridden there once years ago on a road bike, I heard somewhere that the road is in bad shape and dangerous - is it ok to still ride the road bike or would I be better served with the mtb?

that 1st ride broke me....I have not been back since but I guess I must man up.

Road is fine for road bikes if not better than most of our public roads!

road there june last year. roads were great then.

the loop technically is a one way system. HOWEVER, many times we came across cars going the wrong direction or parked on a blind corner.

keep your wits about you when you decent!

otherwise some of the best riding in gauteng!

Paid R 45 Single person and a car on Sat.

Roads are not too bad . Good most of the way.

As for the hills. There's the first one and the last one.And in between there's that other one. And then the shorter one before the downhill .With a steeper one near the south gate, and then the other one before the downhill to the last one, and then............................

Road bike is fine , don't be too windgat as you pass the MTB's. Some have a way of catching up.

I SURVIVED (only did the 11km loop) and I didn't cry, but OMG guys. I managed to not walk but had to stop often to catch my breath. the downhills were good fun and I earned them.

riding into the wind on the uphill and the wind coming across on the down was another serving of HTFU

was R25 per person and the roads look to be on great Nick.

How about a mtb trail?

That would be cool, according to their trail descriptions, they have a 8km jeep track loop, this is what is used to trick noobs out there.

Once you're there if you have a sadistic partner like I have, there's a 11km tar road loop with some hard core climbing and then there's the 55-60km loop with the crying section (hearsay )

I don't care who you are... This is not for beginners! Sometimes when I'm there and I see people stopping halfway up the first Hill... I stop and suggest they go home. Even when I'm fit... I suffer like hell :granted, I ride much faster... But it's not the kinda ride you can take easy.

I made the mistake and took a rookie there... It took him 6 hours!!!!

And he stopped cycling!

Is gorgeous and safe and great training... But don't think it's easy.

The 11km loop on the tar is doable, but if you can't get up the first hill without stopping, don't even think about doing the 55km loop. Agreed.

Even the hiking, my mom wanted to tag along for a hike, we met up on the tar and we had to go get my car and take her back, that place is steep.

Let me know how it is please...one of my friends came back crying & I've been too scared to try it since then!

Wait a second....it's a work day?...slacker!

Your friend is a pussy.

We leave from Rivonia, and ride through to Suikerbosrand, do the loop through the reserve and then head home. About 230 when we're done. Nice Saturday outing.

Pull yourself together man!!!

Drink some cement and harden up!

Can you leave your vehicle at the entrance gate and is it safe to do so? Don't want to drive all the way to centre of the reserve to leave vehicle as I will be coming from Meyerton's side.. Hope to do my 1st one this weekend.

Re: mtb route, The area/nature reserve has massive potential but 'they' have had lots of issues with cyclists in the past, but hopefully in time we can put a proposal on the table and get some support. In the meantime, its a great training ride, and an opportunity to use a road bike.

I have seen a few people leaving their vehicle at the entrance gate to ride in the reserve. The gates are manned so I suppose its safe.

Have ridden the MTB route once. it's a bit boring, but if they developed it's potential it could be a MTB mecca better than anywhere else in the country.
