This morning, whilst doing intervals on my IDT, I managed to hit 209 bpm. I immediately stopped training (it was my third last interval,) despite feeling fine.

 

Could it be a faulty HRM? I have the Tom Tom MultiSport which isn't getting heaps of praise. Or could it be a faulty ticker...

 

My max HRM based on standard calculations is 185.

Doesnt sound right, could be your battery starting to pack up, but as the "wiseable wisdoms" of the Hub would say,..."Go and let your ticker be checked"

forget the calculation...its an indicator at best, not a definite. Have you hit that number before? Did it drop after a few seconds instead of gradually coming down. If so then yes, probably something funky with HR strap. If you have seen that number before especially when riding hard or on tough climbs...that is your new max.

I often go up to 220 (and my max is 181)... Its normally when the heart rate sensor dries out to much (downhills, cold , etc) and don't make contact to your skin properly .

 

Search for heart rate monitor spikes on google. lots of info about the issue.

I've done 200 a few times before. Steadily decreases after.

 

Where would one go to get a proper HR assessment?

Do it yourself....on an indoor trainer just to minimize variables like slopes, traffic and wind. Warmup for 8 minutes at followed by 5, 20 sec fast cadence sprints....then rest for about 1minute 30 seconds...just turning the pedals over.

 

Then go as hard as you can for 3 minutes...and I mean as hard as you can. don't look at numbers, just focus on trying to destroy the bike. Take data, upload to strava or analysis tool and get max HR.

you can have long discussions about this, it differs from person to person and also on your level of fitness and fatigue. Mine still hits 200 every now and again and I can average 190bpm for entire races and still feel okay. believe me your body will let you know for sure if it wants you to stop

Did you not see a naked goose walk past, my HR spikes like that when I see pretty ladies.... just saying
