The Munga MTB Race

All the organisers really have to ensure, is that the event gets that cred as the ultimate tough guy event - they really only need 150/200 teams, from all over the world to make it viable. Value for money was never in the brief. This is simply just gunning to be the #1 Mtb challenge - they pull off building the name and making this numero uno on the mtb to do list, and those entries will fly like hotcakes...

It does seem to be the main idea, interesting that they are doing it the opposite of the Cape Epic strategy which was to first earn the cred and then when they are hooked charge them whatever you like.

I'm not convinced by the whole just because it's tougher it will be more appealing idea - if that was true something like the Freedom Challenge would have been a mass participation event like the Sani2C by now.

Lets see if there are 100's of rich cyclists all over the world just waiting to throw their money at this thing, if the organisers get it right, I'm sure it will revolutionize the way organisers look at mtb events. Fail or succeed, it's going to be interesting...

Sadly, more people probably already know about the Munga than the Freedom Challenge... FC is also far more time consuming, 2/3 weeks is a far bigger commitment than a week. Even top CEO's etc can't just take off a month here or there.

And let's be frank, these days it is so much about names etc for so many people, just like the car you drive or the area you live in - take Cape Pioneer Trek as an example, it is largely regarded as tougher than (or equally as tough) as the Epic, you get to see more of the Cape and from my personal view it is probably a more attractive option. That's before I even look at entry fee. But tell my non cycling friends I am riding the Cape Pioneer Trek and all I will get asked is if I have ridden the Epic

have we had any hubber actually admitting to paying for a entry?????

with all the NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT ENTRY COSTS

WHO IS DOING IT????

I am...

Just trying to improve my odds for the underdog prize with all the negative comments

Well, this is where we get to see :)

Problem is, it's likely to get won by an unknown Russian hardman - who supplements with 'turtle blood' or somesuch...

or those obscure Aussie nutters who ride 500+km in one go.

I bet the winner will be somebody unknown to the marketed world.

Haha! the truth... But geez 100K for a race is pushing it!

Absolutely true!

Those who do wanna enter it better do so before it costs them R150k or closer to R170k

Good point. If I look at some of the Strava challenges and see what sort of mileage some guys no-one's every heard of do, then I think we may see some 'unknowns' winning this.

To me a big issue is going to be the drug tests. With this much money at stake there will be chancers.

Have any of the pro MTB'rs tweeted any intentions / comments over The Munga?

Kevin Evans has dropped some hints, not sure if he is serious though

You move in serious cycling circles, or the question would have been: "What was your last Argus time?"

I reckon some pro's (as in real pro's) could possibly be up for this. If it is not too technical, imagine if the likes of Cancellara, Boonen, Sagan, Froome, Nibali etc. giving this a go... Its smartly timed at the end of the cycling season, so in contrast with the epic, none of the pro riders will be limited in terms of their racing schedule, however they might lack form at this time of year.
