Must admit I'm a bit sceptical about this... Without a headline sponsor, broadcast rights etc where is the prize money coming from?

Or is the massive entry fee supposed to cover the prize money? tbh would not be surprised if this doesn't get off the ground...

Agree .

I spoke to some people very close to the organisation of this last night a the launch. The prize money has already been secured. They dont need the entry fees to pay the prize money. This is definitely happening, unless no one enters...

I wonder if anyone who does not believe that they have a chance of winning will enter? Non-competitive riders would surely rather do the Freedom Challenge, or part of it if 2,300km is to far. I'm hoping that the worlds best riders/adventurers will be attracted due to the prize money and in so doing promote SA further as a top MTB destination. Good on the organizers for pushing the sport to the next level.

Wonder if others will be happy if Alex Harris enters? He will then have knowledge of the route before the other entrants and this will be a huge advantage. Unless he totally divorces himself from that part...

Will be interesting to see how many pro's will alter their Epic plans to enter this and then you also have the tough 24hr racers that could be good competition. Look at the guy that recently won the 36One

My body and my brain says YES, my bank balance says NO.

My body, butt, legs, lungs, brain, bank balance, wife, everything, screams NOOOOOOOO! My bike and my heart are the only things that says YES!

The good thing they have done here is the underdog prize. Anyone who finishes within the cut off time and outside the top 3 has a chance of winning $100,000...

He has confirmed on twitter that he will not enter his own race...

as posted before...being the organizer and the purse at stake...it won't be cricket.

The crazy thing is this is still relatively small money in the grand scheme of things - there are golf tournaments with 10 times the prize money. Well done to Alex and his team for smashing the pre-conceived boundaries of what is Mtb racing.

This is kind of the birth child of the Cape Epic and the Freedom Challenge, and will answer that question of who is the toughest...???
