If you want to flog that TRX to a garage that will treasure it…….shout. Be a nice fit in alongside my various twins. Ducati 1098 and 749, Suzuki TL1000S, KTM RC8, Yamaha MT01, BMW BCR 1100R Randy Mamola (factory edition).

It's on FB marketplace - if you are serious and promise not to turn it into some half-bakes cafe racer thing we can definitely chat.  I'll send you the brief I wrote - it's probably a bit harsh but I like to be open and honest about what I'm selling so everyone knows!

Hairy, I negotiate contracts for a living. Sometimes I am successful at this and sometimes I am less successful at this.

my opinion here and nothing more. I reckon you are approaching this from the wrong position. That being the cap in hand position. Why this should be I cannot say but I reckon it’s time to change this approach. You are the customer , you are the one being screwed over here you should be wayyyyyy more demanding.

and I mean this is a nice way.

Ship it here, I promise to not cut it at all. And I will ride it to all the famous biker hangouts and take pictures and send to you. The bike will have a good life and will be looked at with awe and admiration as they are seldom seen here.

So my Brother recently moved to the UK and shipped his collection over - some to the UK and some to Portugal.  In a nutshell, he reckons he would have been better off selling everything here in SA and buying them new in the UK.  None of the Ducati's will pass MOT because they all have aftermarket ECU's and Pipes - something which is common to change here in SA and the old 900SS and my Dad's Velo Thruxton are listed as "Built up" on the RC1 forms, so he can't even get those registered to get some form of MOT.

All these guys in SA who see the GBP prices of bikes and think they can ship them over in a container - take 40% off that price for shipping, import duties, insurance etc.  A nice TRX in the UK - probably GBP3000?  That's R63K - less 40% - Probably going to get out R38k.  Easier to just sell them in SA!

You get something here called a Q plate for bikes of unknown origin. It’s more expensive to insure and it’s not ulez free irrespective of age. ECU changes here you probably could get through MOT and pipes will depend on the loudness and mood of the tester.  Find a nice biker tester or put a db killer pipe on for the MOT only.

as to prices, that ship sailed a long time ago. It’s something I looked at doing when I moved here as a side hustle. Could have made some money but these days it’s a thin market unless you bring a whole container and you know ppl who know ppl. Plus the ZA biker now has a keen sense of pricing so you not going to pick up a pristine katana for 50 grand zar. Unless you have a pristine gamma 500, RD500, NR750 or similar it’s not worth it as you say.

(edit. Not the nc750 but the NR750. )

By the way, i also keep an eye out on the classic car market here. It’s taken some big knocks lately for 2 reasons. One, the cars were over valued in previous years and secondly the guys who would restore them or want to own them are all passing on. A double whammy.

still would like to get my hands on a super boss though but have to be realistic that it’s unlikely to happen. Better off buying a modern mustang.

I will check it out. I have an option (maybe) on one in CT. Bit difficult to sort as I am currently in US and ideally like to see the bikes I buy now. Back in SA end Feb……or earlier if the Boss gives us Ramadan off!

and I mean this is a nice way.

I have had a few harder messages for him the last two or so weeks, with no response.

It is like shouting into the wind, on the open seas, while stuck in an inflatable dingy with a slow air leak.

The one point I have had in mind all along, is that this would eventually go to the point where I go to small claims court or to the police, and if it went this route, my communication has to be clean, clear and supportive of getting the bike going to give me the best overall shot of the decision being in my favour.

I tried a soft approach with his wife, as whenever I saw her in the workshop (When he still had it) and I let her know my frustrations, things happened. Personally I think she is also in an inflatable dingy with a slow air leak in the middle of the ocean, the only difference is she has a small kid and the waters have sharks circling them.

So will follow up today to see if she got hold of him or not.

Got a guy around yesterday to see if he would buy the bike as scrap. He made a 8.5K offer on the bike as is, but accepting this feels like I am giving up, and it does not sit well with me.

Spoke to another workshop I thought may be the right team, but they do not work on the LC4 motors. Their recommendation is to speak to KTM.

I understood that Wynand used to be their main tech as one point funny enough.

Will reach out to them, to see if the project will interest them, and to get an idea if their costs will kill the "dream".

From the missing parts I can sort out a stator and stator cover easy, just the radiator protection, belly plate and few small plastic would be a challenge to get, maybe ....

So

Step 1 is to approach KTM CT.

Step 2 is to sell the bike as is, then just be patient and slowly stow away a few ZAR as I can and try and find a bargain bin bike that runs and is reliable ... cosmetics is not that critical, I just want to ride the $#^^@#$ thing.

Ok, apparently tomorrow or the following day he will bring the parts to his wife's house.

At least he now has apparently found a stator cover.

Honestly, not holding my breath
