I saw comments on Facebook that Basil Cohen has passed away. A sad day for cycling. He was a legend. Bought many a bicycle form Deale and Huth and his commentary at Hector Norris Park on Sundays was legend. He knew every cyclist by name.

He was cycling in South Africa and had so much to still offer the world of cycling.

May he rest in Peace and never be forgotten for his contribution and influence on many cyclists.

I bought my first "serious" road bike from him at Deale & Huth. A steel Zini! (remember those) Also upgraded through several bikes and bought my first track bike there! At the time I thought there were no other bike shops!

RIP Basil - you are a legend!

At one stage there were no other bike shops. Anything worth buying was at D&H. Loved my Zini :-)

Very sad news. Used to catch the train from the west rand to Joburg in the mid 80's just to go window shopping at Deal and Huth. They were the first cycling mega store and even listed on the stock exchange during the late 80's cycling boom.

RIP Basil. Condolence to the Cohen family and friends.

Many fond memories of the Jhbg CBD store, Hector Norris Park Sunday meets, weekly training and visiting the frame factory across the road in Wemmerpan Road to buy a new bike.

Anyone keen to meet at Hector Norris Park next week for a social ride on old SA made frames?

RIP Basil.

He was Mr Cycling South Africa. "The Shop" was a meeting place for cyclists, and Sundays at hector Norris Park were exciting with his commentary.

As chairman our Club Northern Wheelers he put a good few events on the map like the "Ill Camponie" (spell)

He gave cyclists such as Alan Van Heerden a boost by employing them in the shop and ensuring they had time to train.

He will live on in my memories.

I guess thats where my Zini's model name came from, (Ill campione).

Bike shops in those days were a place where you could hang out. i remember spending hours after school chatting to various bike shop owners on my daily rides. I dont how they tolerated us young punks knowing we spent hardly anything, in fact, often they would help us out for nothing. Far cry from todays shops.
