while we on the topic of directing...i am adding a poll to the movie thread for the best director

Wow, that's a tough one.

Scorsese

Eastwood

Tarantino

Joel Coen

Coppola

Even Spielberg. A much underestimated pop-director.

All made great movies and a few not-so-great.

ok added...I have allowed multiple choice because while going through it I knew i needed to vote equally for at least three or 4...and then of course you have to take into account overall impact...so while Spielberg for example may not be a favourite of mine (despite his brilliance in Jaws) he has to be included because he is damn good and has impacted many directors since.

And then we also tend to forget the old timers like hitchcock and orson welles. I might be mistaken but I think Hitchcock has more movies in the imdb top 250 than anyone else.....food for thought...or someone can go verifyfor me

I have also omitted some "new" directors like ben  affleck and sopfia coppola (although..can you call her new? mmmm)

edit: let me know if I have missed out anyone

I'm just going to answer myself

How's this for a CV

Psycho (Top 250 #36 )
Rear Window  (Top 250 #37)
North by Northwest (Top 250 #63)
Vertigo (Top 250 #66)
Rebecca (Top 250 #147)
Dial M for Murder (Top 250 #163)
Strangers on a Train (Top 250 #205 )
Notorious (Top 250 #218)

and that excludes about another 5 movies that are on the cusp...like the birds and 39 steps etc

and here's the answer....seems like I missed a few...if anyone really wants one of the ones I have missed i'll add them

Which old movies do you like watching again from time to time?

I have a few favorites. Even ones where you know the major plot twist but watch it again anyways?

Not limited to "from time to time". If it's on TV, I'll watch - if there's nothing to watch, then I'll pick a random movie from the list below:

  • Dirty Dozen;
  • All the Bond movies, from Dr No until I get to the latest release, then I start again a few years later.

    I bought the box set just before Casino Royale was released (as individual items and not in a set) - pity as the Daniel Craig movies each have different covers ruining the box-set display;

  • Shawshank Redemption;
  • Life Is Beautiful (La Vita è Bella);
  • Ocean's Eleven;
  • Italian Job;
  • ET - my daughter is to blame for this one;
  • Star Wars trilogy;
  • Indiana Jones trilogy;

I'm sure there are more that I have that I can't think of.

I think Pierce Brosnan ruined bond for me. I kinda like the direction the Daniel Craig movies went to. Some more than others. But I miss the suave bond that was Sean Connery. From Russia with love is still my favourite

Bond: You're one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen.

Tatiana: Thank you.. but, I think my mouth is too big.

Bond: No, it's the right size. For me, that is.

Timothy Dalton doesn't do it for me - although I still enjoy both movies.

Connery has to be No.1

Craig second

Moore and Brosnan can fight it out for third

and poor Lazenby - didn't do enough for me to compare with any of them. Think Dalton and Lazenby can fight it out for the wooden spoon/mic/script.

Then there's the Bond girls... much harder to stack in order.

Jeez they should have stopped making these 8 movies ago... (No the 8 was not a typo ;))

Agreed. The only reason the first one was tolerable was vin diesel.

They are all very good. Just have to be in the right frame of mind and not take them too seriously. Fun actions movies are to scarce these days.

The driving skills in the movie are pretty cool, but to me it was a case of take a good idea and milk it to within an inch of its life and then milk it some more - although as you say they still make good money and at the end of the day I guess that's what movies are about.

Timothy Dalton almost destroyed the bond franchise with his legal wranglings....so much so that he should be struck off the bond Rolf call

First movie I watched at the bioscope was a james bond movie. . Can't remember which one cause I kept on running ouy to check if it was still light outside. (I remember something about a head in a crocodile)

First movie I watched at the drive-in was ET and I hid behind the car seat cause ET freaked me out big time, scary looking thing that, had nightmare for ages.. eventually watched it as an adult. . Still freaked me out.[emoji12]
