Yoh that man must have some stories to tell.. can't even imagine the hell he went through.

Indeed .. like eating leather because its the only thing to eat.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin is another film on the theme of Italian conscripts caught up in that horrible war.

Not quite the same as it wasn't army conscripts but my great uncle told me his story of how Italian people living in England were sent to 'camps' as they were considered a risk of spying etc. He was seconded into the one near his house as he could speak Italian. He became great friends with an Italian man who immediately went back to Italy after the war but they visited each till they were too old to travel. He told me lots about the 'camp', fascinating to hear first hand about aspects of the second world war

Watched 'Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them' with wifey last night. At first I was a little put off with idea of the movie being mainly about these "fantastic creatures", I was hoping for a little more of a Harry Potter feel to it, even though in the movie there was mention of Hogwarts and Albus Dumbledore.

All in all, I found the visuals rather fantastic, with a fantastic story line as well.

  • 3 weeks later...

Watched Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and I felt somewhat underwhelmed.

Or maybe I just want more light sabres and the comeback of the Jedis.

Feels like they are just milking the franchise and not reinvesting in the future story line as they only paid token respect to some of the main characters of the franchise towards the end. Felt like an after thought...

4 movies I watched this past week

Rogue One

The Accountant

Dr Strange

The Arrival

Most enjoyed R1 and The Accountant, but for different reasons. Rogue One, whilst not being a great standalone movie, slots VERY well into the SW universe, and fits very neatly before Ep IV. Character development was okay, but I mostly liked it 'cos it had great humour, was fast-paced and fit the bill for a SW flick. Made me want to watch Ep 4 again just to continue from where this left off, so for me a RAGING success.

The Accountant was just brilliant, IMO. Character development was insane, and the twists and turns just got me perfectly. LOVED it.

The latter 2 - meh. Dr Strange was okay, but I feel that they relied too much on CGI to overcome some shoddy acting from a few of them, and while though Benedict Cumbersomesnatch was good in teh role, the other players would have done well to immerse themselves in their roles more fully.

The Arrival started off very well, and the score was just EXCELLENT. But I felt it tapered off in the last half hour, and lost its way. I left feeling disappointed. Or, rather, underwhelmed, mostly probably because I'd been so looking forward to it and hoping it was another Interstellar type space opera type movie, but on Earth.

funny how our experiences differ. I felt it fit very well. There weren't any Jedi in the flick apart from that old blind guy, who, I felt, played the part brilliantly.

It was essentially the story revolving around those who "risked much" to get the plans that were so critical in Ep 4. Yeah, it can be seen as milking it, but I appreciate the addition and I reckon it lends itself well to the story as a whole.

Enjoyed Rogue One more than last year's SW7. Definitely one for the fans.

Indeed.

I found the comments critical of it to be a bit strange. "Not a movie in its own right" and "can't stand on its own" to name 2 criticisms of it. Erm - it wasn't SUPPOSED to stand on its own. But it was bloody brilliant!
