Cool!

Do you remember book exchanges? There's a small one in my suburb called Second Edition, but you don't see them much anymore.

Yes. Fondly. There are a couple in on the Garden Route, though I don't visit them often anymore. Too many freebees on Amazon and my bookcases are full anyway.

Actually wondering what to do with all my books!

I don't hold onto mine. Am about to take a boot-load up to Hospice after a clear-out. Sure, there are some I hold onto - rarely novels though, but reference-coffee table type books.

I read an interview some years ago with Paulo Coelho, and he said he often leaves books in public places - buses, cafes, trains - after he's read them, so that someone else might get something from them too. I thought that was pretty cool.

it is a roaring trade here, i can think of 2 shops in s/west that do it, and one in gordons bay. they are flippen awesome. the only thing they dont do is hardcover books and text books.

you get 50% back on every book you take back that you purchased.

A good idea, there must be someone around here that will accept the books.

I collected books for many years, so have a ton!

Some are pass onable to family, first editions and such. But there are plenty of novels, that people will still read.

Also some 'old' academic books, suggesting that the earth is flat, or that maybe there are particles smaller than the atom. These may be worth something, though to whom I have no idea.

The earth's not flat?!!!It's sad that we wouldn't think of our local libraries first. I mean, I've seen lights on at mine, but no clue if it's still open. Talking of libraries...I had a warm memory of one the other day. Years ago, in my early teens, I met a girl called Monique while on holiday. I fell in love. She did, then unfell when it was time to go home. We both lived in Boksburg but at other ends. Some time later, in the Boksburg Library, I came across David Goldblatt's book Boksburg. There was a picture of a girl in ballet pose on the porch of her family home. I was convinced it was Monique. I would often seek out that book if I ever went to the library for projects and stuff over the years, and have a peek. Just recently, a Goldblatt retrospective was on display here in Jozi, and I thought of the library nd that pic of who I thought was Monique. So, I went off to the gallery in search of her again...:-)

Oooh I remember the old Johannesburg library in town.

I remember the day I turned old enough to go to the adult library, and the librarian lady swapped my children's library card for a grown up one :)

Diagonally opposite my old office in town! Grand building. These days it serves more as a rallying point for protests. The brick paving outside being loose provides whoever has grievances that day with something to pelt cops with.

Oh yes, just what I always wanted...to decapitate toys so people know how twisted I really am... ;)

I'm gonna track down a bobble head of a metal head, take it to the sherif and have it fitted to your favorite carbon. Don't have to thank me :D

Still a library. Last went in about seven or eight years ago when The Star closed its clippings and archiving department. Reminds me of a story about a valuable archive of sports photography that was lost to a rubbish tip...will tell it when I get home maybe.

Wow, must pop in and check it out...on a bit of a limb... The collectors treasury down commissioner street - another little gem of Joburg. And listening to these guys and their stories - it's a charm.
