The BBB one work best and also have the lock lever at the bottom of the handle. I paid only R80 for mine from Rush Sports last year. Think they are like R110 from Sportsmans.

Seems like such a stupid tool. Then you use one and you'll never go back.

I snapped my chain HG54 on the trail last week with only 500km on it luckily not far from home.. bought a chain tool and some missing links with a spare one for next time. I'm going to buy a spare chain (upgraded from the HG54) for back up. A LBS told me not to go for for the KMC rather stick with Shimano 2x10. Question is can you run Sram chains on Shimano set up and vicsa versa. I was led to believe KMC make good chains...

Apparently KMC is the OEM that makes Shimano's chains, so probably a little bs from the LBS.

You can use virtually any make 10-speed chain on any 10spd system, I have mixed and matched Sram/Shimano/YBN/KMC never had an issue, the YBN Gold-ti chain was the best.

I've been told a SRam chain is superior to Shimano one

You've been talking to the wrong people, and they've been feeding you a load of BS.

Both are only as good or bad as the rider, the mechanic who installs them, and the gears they run on.

I run the SRAM 1091 hollow pin chain.

It last for ever on my bike and the noise coming from my shifter is louder than the chain over the cogs. I have to add that the chain develop lateral bend quite quickly though but this far it has not caused any chain slip off my NW chairing.

2 months for me on a 1091 chain.

I buy the cheapest chain that works.

On your SS?? Ummm

Maybe my ave afternoon rides don't have enough climbs... only 13.5m ascend over every 1km

Or maybe I don't ride in enough dirt/mud or clean and lube too much

Or I take too much care when I actually change gears (not in a power stroke going up hill)

Or maybe I'm just lucky.

When I bought the 1091 it was actually cheaper than the 1051. Lucky again.

On a geared bike, 2400 k's and that thing is a total throw away.

Hollow pin......fancy pancy weight saving. The one that came with my bike is used as an emergency back-up. Just give it a little to much force and it snaps, crackles and rattles off the drive train. Now only using the cheaper bulletproof versions......no problems.

Sheesh...171km per day?

Yeah, my previous one lasted just over that. Then I put a new one on with the chainring swap.

I've read that 2500km is actually very good for MTB chains. I know of people replacing theirs in way less than that.

The maths needs a bit of work, 300 k's a week over 2 months makes an average of around 43 km' s per day.

I think Barhuhgger explained that chain nicely .

I have absolutely no idea as to what chain is on any of my bikes.

The only thing i do know is that I can put n new master link and gooi a lot of lube.

But if i get to that part of fixing chains my bike goes to my LBS the next working day.
