Hi Guys.

I taken the plunge about a week ago and bought a MTB.

Silverback Sola 4.

I have now entered into the Curo Hazeldean Race 10km end of August.

This is all very new to me and i am not sure what the practical implications are in two areas:

Equipment I Have.

Cycling shorts

Helmet

2 water bottles

spare tube

co2 inflater

patch kit

small cycling tool

Tyre leevers

What will i need additionally and what do i take out?

Logistics / documentation

Upon entry i selected the SAseeding option for R50. Was this necessary and what does this mean?

Where do i get a race number? On the day?

Do I show my Advenduarnce invoice on race day or only an ID?

What documentation do i need to take along etc?

Sorry for all the questions. As you can see... this is very new to me.

Thank you.

Welcome to the world o MTB Tinus.

From your list, it appears that you have the essential tools.

The R50 for SAS means you bought a numberboard that canbe used for races that uses the SAS seeding system. you keep the board, and you will use it in any race where SASeeding is involved.

The SASeeding system takes all your race results and uses it to batch you according to your performance for the next race.

Just take yourself to number collection, tell them your name and they will give you your numberboard, batch sticker etc.

On raceday remember your helmet and enjoy the ride!!

Added to your list. These things seem a little obvious but why not list most of them.

Cycling shorts

Cycling shirt

Helmet

Shoes (socks)

Gloves (will save the hands)

Glasses (nice to have)

2 water bottles (don't forget to fill)

spare tube

co2 inflater (plus co2 bombs)

patch kit

small cycling tool (10kms, not really necessary, check and test the bike before hand)

Tyre lever

Race Board and Number

Good idea is to pack the gear the night before so that you don't rush and forget things in the morning. Don't forget to check tire pressure.

Welcome, you seem to have everything covered.

As has been said prepare and pack everything the night before, then you are not rushing or forgetting anything in a panic. I use a plastic box (get from plasticland or similar). My kit and everything is packed into the box the night before, and I just grab my bottles from the fridge and put the box in the car, put the bike on and head off.

As is your first race, give yourself plenty of time to get there, so that you are not rushing.

Kit up, head to the start point, the announcer will advise you of the groups as they head off, enjoy the ride, don't take it too seriously first time out, look to finish and enjoy the vibe

Enjoy the beer afterwards!!

I remember my first race (which started my cycling 'career'). I came first in the 10km race, way back in 2001 (on a Game special).

I think I did a 5 or 10km race when I was like 5 years old, but I don't count that as my first race.

Maybe a suggestion seeing as you are planning to use two bottles. Use one for water and one for energy drink. 2 bottles of energy drink for that distance would be an overkill. If the trails gets muddy, u can also use the clean water to rinse off the mud buildup on the Front derallieur if its that bad.

Otherwise...enjoy your first race!

To add: As it's your first race, start in the back quarter of your batch. The guys in front are normally over-confident, the guys right behind them are the guys that can peddal like hell, and the guys behind them are the guys that are actually there to enjoy the race/ride for what it's worth.

90% of a race's enjoyment is the ride - make sure you take in the sights and sounds, ride safe rather than be sorry afterwards, don't push yourself in your first 'race' - use it to suss out the scene, and the pace - the pace is normally a shocker for first timers :D

Above all, remember to enjoy the ride! Don't worry about your time or speed etc etc - save that for later, when you do your umpteenth race and want to rev it!

Small things matter, like packing two days before the race, all your kit that you need on the bike, all your kit you need off the bike. At the Advendurance races there are mobile showers for after the ride, take a towel, soap and slops with. And don;t forget the beer money!

Good advice this. Curro will be very busy and Babbas will be perfect for a dry run.

Also, so you dont have to learn this the hard way: do not start by going full out. Start at a pace you can maintain for 10km. If you finish, with still plenty fuel in the tank, maybe experiment a bit more at the next race.

And learn from the mistakes you make, like my mistake on my first Argus. I had two bottles filled with Energade. Almost did not complete the race. If it wasn't for the last water point, wouldn't have finished the race.

Look behind you before you move off your line, someone could be overtaking you. :excl: :excl:

And likewise, if overtaking someone, make your intentions known, i.e. "passing left/right".

Seen way to many take each other out.
