pista Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Pity, was worth the drive from PE to participate. Seems less and less road races these days, whereas MTB races seem to be increasing? MTB is the new golf.

BeegMig Posted July 30, 2014 Posted July 30, 2014 Sad day for Cycling indeed. The Classic has been coming a long way. Remember riding it in the early 90's when it was still the OFM Classic held in Bethlehem. Must have been one of the older events in SA.

Cheese Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 We had around 5000 cyclist doing the event. So can not really see numbers being that much of an issue.Maybe the sponsors just not getting what they wanted from the event. The shorter distance also had a growing field on the road race and the MTB event was growing annually. Will really have to keep doing anything that appears on calender to try and assist in keeping events alive.
hboli4 Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Hopefully a sponsor can still be found. Similar to the Soweto marathon being canned last year due to lack of funding / sponsor and being back this year. Wasn't it almost canned last year already and the municipality (Mangaung) stepped in?
