If you can DIY it you'll save loads. Otherwise you are paying for someone's time and that unfortunately doesn't come cheap nowadays.

Probably not more than R50 material in that (if that).

So you want to skimp on paying R300 for a fitting to secure your thousands of Rands bike safely from the possibly of falling off your trailer if you get a cheapy made up??

I guess so... just a bit strapped for cash at the moment I guess, trying to save where I can, was hoping I could've had one made for much cheaper.

But thanks everyone for the replies, seems like I'll have to fork out for the adapter.

Hi,

So I've spend spent all my money on a new bike and now I can't put it on our trailer rack because of the through axle. I checked around for prices on a through axle mount for the trailer and it going to cost about R300, which is crazy in my opinion.

I saw this on some on a international site and though for somebody with the know how, it could be pretty simple to make...

I will obviously pay if someone can make it for me.

Bring a few beers and I will show you how a welder and angle grinder works .

R300 is cheap. That won't even buy burgers for a family of 4 at the Spur.

A friend of mine made something similar to load his bike onto a trailer. The thing broke and all he saw in his mirror was his carbon Specialized bouncing down the road.

Rather get the proper thing and pay R300

Yeah, thanks for the advice, probably going to to go with the R300 adapter.

exactly - so i recon the OP is not going to find the part for much cheaper than what he has found online.

I'm in the engineering game - if I was making 1000s, I could make for a LOT less than R300. For a 1 off, however, better to pay the R300 - I doubt anyone would bite. For a DIY project, though, it really is quite simple (as long as you have grinder, welder, paint....).

Good Luck

Hi Cat joe,

Please provide the site you found the axle on.

Cheers

Hey Joey, I called a company called Hanler Products based in Benoni (hanlerproducts.co.za), they sell parts for bike racks, mountings etc. the lady gave me a price of around R400 which she said is RRP, but she said I would probably find it cheaper if I called one of the stores that they supply. She said I should check with Linden Cycles who should have it for about R350, I haven't yet called them to check. Westdene cycles had the same thing but another brand for R430.

Whatever you get make sure that the ends of the "pipe" is flat and square if not it could wreak havoc with the ends of your fork. The thicker the wall of the pipe the better too.

Here is the next option

You get a 15mm drill and drill through the existing mount and you sorted ,just make sure the fork or caliper doesn't catch .

That sounds like a plan, I'll just have to drill really straight. Will a normal everyday drill work? Or will I need something heavy duty? Will I have to adjust the width?
