Quick one...

I have recently purchased a bike that has the SRAM BB30 Crank and bearing and it seems great, runs smooth and is easily maintained (regarding you have a pressfit tool and circlip removers  ).

Now my question to all you hubbers is what would you prefer? The simple Shimano Hollowtech type or the SRAM BB30? Reasons please...

Side note, can you change from a BB30 to Hollowtech?

No difference in my opinion. I was using BB30, just recently changed to using Shimano cranks, purely because I prefer to have a complete matching groupset. Was never keen on the mismatched crank.

Changing from BB30 to Hollowtech is easy, there are adaptors available. I've found the one that works best for me is Wheels Manufacturing ~ remove the BB30 crank, press in the the adapters, fit the Shimano crank, done in minutes.

I've had no problems with creaking etc, but then I do service my bikes regularly so everything is generally clean and grind / creak free.

Did you buy a Cannondale? :whistling:

I've got a Cannondale Flash with SRAM BB30. The Flash is just much better than my previous bike, so I think a lot of the improved stiffness and pedaling efficiency is due to that rather than the BB30. But I can't be sure.

Regarding maintenance: Yes very easy to remove the SRAM crankset, but removing the pressfit bearings you need the tool. But yes, easy to get to clean externally and re-apply grease.

Regarding durability: Here I am not so impressed. After about 8 months (2000-2500kms) my BB started feeling rough. I'm still riding it now and it's fine. So doesn't seem as durable as Hollowtech.

BB30 is also more expensive to replace...

Me - I hate PF300/BB30 - using the frame as a wear surface just doesn't make sense to me.

Shimano/BSA - once it's screwed in the job is done - no squealing. Replacement is just as easy.

Maybe one of the reasons is that I love Shimano and they don't do BB/PF30 so I need to use adaptors.

Given the choice I'd prefer everything to be screw in.

There are trillions of adaptors available.

My favourite is the quickrock stuff. Locally made and available in ceramic for the larnies.

I use a hammer to remove the bearing and then I just press a new one in. Just gently tap it out from the opposite side. But I do agree, the Shimano system is much easier to maintain and lasts longer

Top tip for pressfit bearing without the pressfit tool....

Moer the old ones out.....they fubar anyway....put the new ones in the deep freeze for 30minutes before fitting, spray a thin coat of spray and cook in shell where bearings will go. Tap in gently and try not to hurt the seals of the bearings...bit of a hack but works nicely.

Or just by Shimano BSA

Yup got me Flash too. Ive never had a SRAM setup so this being my first bike with these components make my servicing skills slightly dim. I'm very hands on and like to fix and F$%k up thing in my own time but not knowing how this BB30 works I might be moering a little more than I should be.

All the info thats been given sounds great, the bearing looks good and is still running smooth for now but would like to know how to fix it when it comes round.

Stupid question but if I change to Shimano can I still use the crank and spindle I have or do I have to change the crank to Shimano to?

You have said it all. No sane reason to have a presfit bearing on a bike, especially the BB. When you have to introduce PTFE tape and slivers of beer can to keep the BB in on a one year old frame you ask yourself what happened to the outboard screw in BB. It was such a big step forward over the square taper and octolink types. Now a step back just so designeres can use lighter frame tubes over bigger joints and market it as "stiffer".

I would rather buy a second hand screw fit BB frame than a new pressfit one. (But then I'm getting old!)

I won't consider a frame either if it only comes out in pressfit standards. BB30 is mos a cannondale invention, and agree a step backwards, here i applaud santa cruz who only brought out the highball with bsa standard stating that it being more serviceable than the pressfit standard...hats off to them
