Agree with NF. I took my wife to the spruit as a noob and she was very intimidated.

There are lots of loops and options at NF. You don't need to follow the trails for the first 11 km - you can get to some easy single track within a couple of downhills and some very easy riding.

NF is good because you can make it as easy or as hard as you like. It's impossible to get lost and people are friendly.

Only downside, for a new rider, is where ever you ride, it's uphill back to the car park!

I usually do a couple of circuits taking a slightly different route each time.

NF for a noob, it definitely won't be boring for him at all, Green route is a quick 12kms with a bit of everything thrown in, and if he is new, 12kms with a bit of ST and small climbs will be just right IMO...

If you have never been to nf then rather take him somewhere you are familiar with

In hindsight, this was the best piece of advice here. I opted for NF for the scenery, after checking out the routes on Strava and reckoned the 12km red route would be a good one. took 2 extra little loops which turned into a 15km ride (by accident / lack of familiarity), and the last 3km's were not enjoyable at all for him. But the first part he thoroughly enjoyed.

A mate of mine got an mtb on Friday and we're taking him for a short leg stretcher tomorrow. My first mtb ride was on the spruit and was a great start so wanted to do the same for my mate.

Nf has also been suggested though. I've never ridden there. Is it a good place to start? Short, non technical routes for a first ride.

NF is a good ride to begin with.

Spruit you have to register on Strava first so you can be timed jumping turds, old ladies and poodles

Yip. +1 for NF. Get there early and out into the fields.

This time of year is awesome with all the green new growth returning and the invader plants not yet recovered from burning.

The spruit is a pile of ass really. Has its place but for a good first time experience head off to NF.

He was huffing and puffing too much to call "LINE"

NF without a doubt. Open fields, safe parking - the 20km route has a nice little hill or two to test a beginner.... switchbacks through the trees and down the river section avert boredom.... I like nF - becoming very fond of van gaalens as well though...:)
