Hi,

Okay, I have decided to do the Stans Tubeless conversion to my new MTB.

Any advice on:

1) Tyres (Best tyres with strong side wall and beading that holds to the rim)

2) Maintenance (How often do you aplly slime etc?)

3) Fixing a flat out on the ride (What about a cut side wall, do you plug the tyre?)

Sorry if I sound clueless! I ride all types of terrain here in Gauteng...

Hi,

Okay, I have decided to do the Stans Tubeless conversion to my new MTB.

Any advice on:

1) Tyres (Best tyres with strong side wall and beading that holds to the rim) Maxxis crossmark LUST are pretty bulletproof...light / strong choose one

2) Maintenance (How often do you aplly slime etc?) Every 6 months

3) Fixing a flat out on the ride (What about a cut side wall, do you plug the tyre?) snotplugs for big holes(99% of time)...gator patch for big cut

Sorry if I sound clueless! I ride all types of terrain here in Gauteng...

1) Matter of personal taste. Won't get definitive answer here.

2) Depends on how much you ride and how often the tyre seals itself after a puncture, and time. Add 50ml every 3 months as a basic for weekend warriors?

3) You shouldn't get a flat, but carry a chjoob in case. Some swear by plugs - I've not used them yet. But I suppose one day I will get a lesson in why I need them. :whistling:

Would be interesting to know what rims you have, that aside see the below:

- Tyres, an age old debate. Depends on how & where you ride. For general marathon type riding you want a tyre for all conditions but must not be too heavy. I would go with either Ikons, Racing Ralph or Fast Track. I've tried them all and have settled on Fast Track Front & Rear

- Maintenance, in a 29er tyre I initially put about 120ml of Stans then top up about a month later. Good to replace about every 3 to 4 months. Use valves with a removable core so you don't have to break the tyre/rim seal when topping up sealant.

- Fixing flats, for punctures I use the strip plugs. I carry 2 sizes for big and small holes. Only required if the sealant does not do the job. Side wall cut, put a tube in until you get home.

Ive ordered the 2015 Giant Anthem x 29er (Giant P-XC2, Double wall rims)

I was told that the racing raplphs (which come standard on my new bike) are not very good tyres for Tubeless as they have a soft side wall and the tyre bead doesn't grip. I also know of someone who is having the same issue with the tyre burping all the time.

Depends on which Racing Ralphs. Check out the Schwalbe website to see the differences. The tubeless ready versions are great, snakeskin even better. Depending on your rim, it is possible to get your standard Racing Ralphs to seal fairly easily, you will need a compressor and some patience though....

used to run race king protection back, x king protection front, race king got a sidewall cut and swapped to Spez Fastrack, excellent fast tyre, did the attakwas and transbaviaans with them no issues

Carry some Duct tape for the side wall cuts, it will help a lot in emmergency

So much this, guy in front of me on the silverstar race got one huuuuuuuge sidewall cut, about 15cm, this was about 5km from the end with no marshalls or anything close by. Yanked you the duct tape(equivalent hehe) patched and taped over the rim for him, he rode it to the finish.

All the tyres mentioned are good. I ride with Continentals (Mountain, X- and Race King) and I've had no problems. Just make sure you get the Protection ones as they are the only ones actually made in Germany (and with the black chilli compound which makes it waaaayyyyy better  ).

My tidbit: try get tubeless tyres with decent sidewalls, that's where I have had problems. ie 'Snakeskin' versions are good. And follow all the instructions for the procedure (on notubes web site) - it does require a bit of patience.
