Rims - how wide is enough?

I have come to the conclusion that I need wider rims for my Trance, to help stop it trying to kill me, but I don't know how wide is enough.

The standard S-CX2 rims have in internal size of 19mm, which have given trouble with Nobby Nics 2.25s as well as WTB Wierwolves 2.25s.

I run 2.0b Front and 2.5b Rear pressure but I still get burps and sideways rolls.

It looks like the widest reasonably priced (£30ish) rim I can find is from superstar and has a 25mm internal width. Will this be enough?

(Also interested if anyone knows whether I can just rebuild onto existing wheelset?)

Im now running Flow ex'x on my Trance. Solved those problems you mentioned. the bead on the flows hooks the tire bead far better than the stock rim. the extra with feels great. far less roll on the corners at low pressure (under 20psi )

Ya, Flows are the answer. Even if the new rim is lower profile, longer nipples will allow you to use the old spokes as I did on my rear wheel. No Tubes rims seem to hold tyres on better than many others and are easy to pump up tubeless. Also look at the tyres you are using - the softer the sidewall and the lower the pressure the more problems you will have.

Sorry to go back to basics here...

So a "wide" rim, should stop the tyre from rolling at lower pressures? And stop burping? Are these the reasons for going wide? More traction I imagine. Wide Lightenings are almost 30mm internal - that's a lot wider than the Arches and Flows...

Anything I'm missing?

I was going to ask the same thing. Wide Lightnings seem to have been left out of this discussion. On the face of it I would have thought they'd be a good option, light, strong, wide and reasonably priced or is there something else to consider?

I looked into wide lightning's. Seemed like a brilliant option. But after much research it seems they aren't so strong. It's so difficult to tell , bet they seem to dent very easily from stones flicking up etc. And the hub prawl engagement is slow. My concern was spending so much on a wheelset , I don't want to have to ride carefully in fear of breaking a rim. Flows are tried and tested. No stress at all.

The reviews I read about being soft related to the older American Classic sets. The new wide lightnings all get good reviews. I have a pair and very impressed.

I ended up changing to a Reign that comes standard with 24mm internal width rims. Huge difference!

I highly recommend that upgrade, with whatever brand you choose.

Flow EX are 25mm wide, but that 20% extra width does a wondrous amount, apparently. As long as they're saying 30mm internal width, that is.

Most brands will quote the external width, which in the case of the Flows is 29.1

Should I wait for those Pyga 30mm carbon rims, or just get a set of Flows? Big price diff I know...

Carbon gonna be lighter but damn that's a expensive weight loss.

Is anyone riding Spank rims on their 27.5" bikes? I'm keen to try them, but they roughly the same price as Stan's. Should I just go for iit?
