Alberto Contador: "Riis departure has not affected me at all'

Alberto Contador insists Bjarne Riis’s departure from Tinkoff-Saxo has not affected him at all, admitting he supports owner Oleg Tinkov’s decisions.

The Spaniard, who will start his Giro d’Italia/Tour de France double on Saturday, says the change in management even suits him better now that his everyday coach, Steven De Jongh, is in charge of the team.

Looking forward to seeing the return of that mad climb up the Colle delle Finestre on the penultimate stage (stage 20) that finishes at Sestriere. It's going to be an epic one, for sure.

And because it will be the highest point of the 2015 Giro at 2178m, it also carries the Cima Coppi prize for the first rider to the top.

The last time they went up there was in 2011 and the weather was very kind - a beautiful sunny day.

What makes the Colle delle Finestre special is that it's dirt road for half of the 18km climb (ave. 9%) and if the weather is bad, that stage is at risk of becoming another chapter in the maglia rosa Book of Legends.

Looking at the favorite list I really do not see anybody touching Contador in the GC :whistling:

You okes don't believe me, but I'll keep banging the Porte drum.

Yes, he has great potential, tombeej

Must yet demonstrate that he can be consistent over 3 weeks and not have one or a few GC destroying days

All to be revealed

Yip, he's had that problem in the past admittedly (on the flip side, one of the reasons why I believe he rides clean).

But those problems have often been due to the fact that he was racing sick. Last year was a bad year for illness. Now that he's shaken that off and looking stronger than ever, I'm holding thumbs he doesn't suffer one of those massive off days again in the coming weeks.

You're right, all to be revealed. Counting the days....

Have to say that I also think he is 1 of the few who rides clean..........well that is until the Sky doping program gets reveiled

Porte was guaranteed leader status when he negotiated his latest contract at Team Sky. He was forced to miss the Giro last year but this season he has been confirmed as captain and his results so far have a set a trajectory that could put him on any of the steps of the final podium in Milan on May 31. He could become the first Australian to win the Giro d'Italia and so take Cadel Evans' place as the best Australian Grand Tour rider in the peloton.

After a late start to his cycling career following years as a swimmer and triathlete, Porte has been a professional since joining Saxo Bank in 2010. He turned 30 in January but admits he has turned an important corner in his career after his problems of 2014. He was diagnosed with pneumonia but also realised he had to make some serious life style changes if he wanted to be a true Grand Tour contender. He recently revealed he has lost close to five kilogrammes after cutting back on his alcohol consumption and changing his diet. It seems that getting engaged also helped him find a far better life balance.

I sure hope you are right!

My heart says Porte, head says the beef tainted beef eating Spanish druggie and I have a sneaky suspicion that Aru could shock a few people (in a good way)...
