so I did the test last night...

After riding my new bike with wide bars and no bar ends for the last month, I rode on a friends bike with narrow bars and bar ends...

wide bars are way way way way way better!!

once things calm down at work i'll do some experimenting of my own.

i think it's one of those things that boil down to personal experience and riding style.

being unfit and out of shape any help up those hills right now will be a

What a co-incidence I did the same 5 minute test earlier the week  riding down to the shop and my finding was that I preferred my bar-ends . So after crunching all the numbers and doing a few case studies I came to the conclusion that it all comes down to ................................... PERSONAL PREFERENCE .

 Nope , but since I had to make a few assumptions when doing my in-debt testing I again assumed that freedom of choice and the whole preference thing would be a given . Big mistake .

Which is why I enjoy mine. I have the Ryder Epic ones which give a couple of options. There are probably better ones out there as mine could do with being a bit chunkier.

The hand position you describe opens your shoulders and improves breathing. I think.

See if you can try out a couple of different ones, look at what your friends have, before you commit. There's a lot of variation, some quite subtle. In the end it's what works best for you and the kind of riding you're doing. Definitely helps prevent gangrene setting in on long hand-numbing rides!!!

Opens shoulders and improves Breathing? ?... Are you Serious? ? All bar ends does is rotates your wrists 45 deg.

My experience, great for climbing, crap on narrow overgrown single track. I ride without them since I got my new bike, they kinda spoiled the look of my bike - beauty before functionality ;)

Get some bar ends. It will make your climbs (non technical) easier, and gives you alternative positions to 'rest' your hands.

I don't  care what other people think (fixed)

As the man says.  Just get them.  They work!

Never, ever, ever have they caught up in anything except my brake when loading into my bakkie.

Just do it.

(It's a pleasure)

Had them on my previous bike after bike fell off carrier opted not to put bar ends back on ( not the reason the bike fell of the carrier  :whistling: )

Ride a lot of farm trails and roads but don't miss the bar ends too much !

So something I've noticed of late, because I keep getting numb hands I've been moving my hands around and adjusting my grips while I'm riding and I've noticed that when I do the "head down and slow slog up a hill" - I climb better (faster and able to to it on a harder gear) with my hands in a light fist resting on the bars as if it was bar ends - so I'm thinking I should get some, but I hear scare stories of catching trees, falling on them etc.

Also the added width to my bar, even if it is just 5cm overall - and it's not a flat bar?

Naf /noob factor doesn't bother me.

Used them for years and luv' em. Improves climbing and hand position options. Never hooked on a tree but I have been brought down by long grass snagging/dragging...you get used to adjusting the ride. Watch the shape. Some are just plain weird while others will fit your hand well. They all fit standard bars. If you have GripShift changers you will find space on the bar a bit cramped. Prices start below R200 and go very high in the case of Ergon.
