Which is better for general xc and marathon riding. I currently use the candy 3. Im forever replacing bearings. The seals are ****. Guys using xt n xtr just seem to go and go.

Candy pedals need regular greasing via a mini grease gun and a special cap. You remove the pedal cap...fit the greasing cap and then push grease in till all the old grease is displaced through the seal. Should do this every couple of months.

Candy 3 has a needle roller instead of the plastic bushing used on Candy1 and 2 for the inner bearing. Lbs mechie told me he prefers Candy2 cos the needle roller bearings on candy 3 cause internal damage if they fail.

Im a big eggbeater/candy fan cos they clip in so easily in mud. Guessing Shimano pedals may be more reliable but that spd system has always been *** in mud.......and 20 years after I first rode them they havent improved hardly at all in that regard. I also fing the spd cleats stick out below the shoes more...making it dangerous to walk on rocks etc in river crossings and when portaging while exploring new places. If you are riding XC /marathons on prepared trails then Shimano likely better but not for what I do.

Shimano requires far less maintenance..and i think that they are more durable and thus more reliable.

Been riding the same pair of eggbeaters on my 26er since about 2004. Replaced the bearings 'n seals two or three times using the CB rebuild kits. Greased them regularly so the shafts are still good. The spring clips are a bit worn now.

On either Shimano or CB pedals if you don't lube them and clean them every now and then, water and mud will get in and grind up the bearings. The problem is it can also corrode the main pedal shaft. Once the bearing surfaces on the main shaft get damaged the pedals are toast......

Ive used a range of crank brothers. They have a fantastic clipping mech. With mud etc. No problem. Ive had this set of c3 for about 7 months. One side is gone and a kit is what about R350. Shimano are durable but less efficient in muddy pasty cons. Thanks for the input.. its great. I think Im sticking with CB. ill do this change and see how long it lasts..ps...I dont power wash my bike. Look s track have been getting good reviews. Im going to look into them a bit more too.

Shimano XT pedals are bomb proof I think the XTR pedals have had problems with the shaft snapping. The look s track pedals aren't as robust as the XT pedals but have much more support for the shoe and hold more securely (XT pedals have a bit of sideways movement) and the cheapest look s track pedals are the best of the range more robust than the other models. I would personally get the look s track pedals.

The sideways movement on the XTs does irritate me a little. If the look s-track don't have that problem, I may look at moving over.

What is the maintenance like on the s-track?
