Right price to sell a bike?

I got a year-old bike I'm considering selling. How should I consider a fair price to sell? Mileage? Age? both? Some 'yearly' fudge factor? It's low-end if that makes any difference.

If it's low end it's probably worth more to you than you'll get for selling it. Pimp it or bless the less fortunate.

But yes, all that you mentioned.

Keep it and pimp it - I have a 2006 Kona Lanai bought new in 2007 for R2500 contemplated selling it many times it has carried me many many miles through singletrack and jeep track up hill and down hill now running xt xtr components next buy is disc brakes and wheelset and suspension the build has been fun and educational and its all my work - wouldn't sell it for the world - its like my wife according to my wife

it depends on what you mean by low end. If it was purchased from a Supermarket, you won't get much for it as those bike generally fall apart after a few months.

If it is an entry level bike of a well known brand, you will probably get 70-80% of the purhcase price (condition depending).

The higher end bikes tend to take more of a depreciation knock.

What bike is it?

Advertise it for what YOU think it is worth. Start high and come down. Remember, you can come down, but you can't go back up. People will start enquiring as soon as the price is right. There is no magic formula to determine price. It is a willing seller, willing buyer scenario. If you have patience, you'll probably get your price if it's too high. Eventually.....  :whistling:

The HUB here is a good place to start.

Look through all the adverts, that are similar in characteristics to yours.

If you are not able to do that, maybe because of basic knowledge,

go in to a reputable bicycle shop, they can give you an idea of what its worth.

Also a little luck is needed in finding the same person, who looks upon your bike with loving eyes,

like you have.

Look on the websites to get an idea whats "market price" as we all know the real price is what someone is willing to pay for that. I would sell it to someone i know... i would rather buy from a friend than from a stranger.... just my opinion.

I simply subtract the "usage" I got out of my bike from the price I paid for it. If it was not ridden hard or much and the condition is good I can ask more.

The "usage" usually comes out to a per month Randelas times the months I had it. Kind of calculating the loss I'm making and if its acceptable.

I honestly don't think its worth selling an old bike unless you sell it to fund another bike or its taking up space and just irritating you.

My wife does not ride much and really wanted a 29er, I sold her old 26er which was in brilliant condition and used the money to fund part the 29er.

I ride a lot (300km pm minimum), and decided to get a better bike but still use the old cheaper one in order to keep maintenance costs down on the expensive bike. I also have a second bike I can use in case something is wrong with the other bike. Commuting with the cheap bike also makes more sense.
