Bike Servicing, why so long

Firstly this is not a complaint against any particular LBS, just a general query.

I recently took my MTB for a service on a Wednesday, only to be told it may be ready lat the next week.

When I take my car in for a service, I take it in the morning, and collect it in the afternoon, why can't bike servicing be like that, or am I being naive?

Maybe they were fully booked and could only look at it then. I've always made an appointment for my bikes and then i take it on the day and it has been very rarely that i could not collect same day.

we do a front wheel drive clutch overall in four hours, trust me its 20x the work, and we pump out between 10-30 a day,

but we do have a saying when people push for things quicker than we can deliver

do you want it right or do you want a rush job?

but that lbs must be realllllly busy

the rush of all the cyclist to get their bikes serviced before the 94.7...

If it's just a standard "run-in-the-mill" service, I'll be worried if I'm in your position.

Best to check with that LBS and find out their reasons for the delay.

How long before the Wednesday did you book it in with them?

Booked it a day before.

I fully understand if they are busy, but it just seems like all shops are the same. I am yet to come across a shop that can have you bike back to you within 2 days.

It takes planning on their behalf...i'm sure they did not need your bike for the whole time. Its much the same here in switz unless you book it in a few weeks before the time you wont get it back in 2 days in peak season.

TBH imo 1 days notice is not enough for them to have it out in a day or so especially at this time of the year in SA

At least they told you it would take till next week

Problem is most LBS are not like the well oiled machine that you find with big name motor dealers who have invested huge amounts into equipment / training and techniques to make it possible to do a basic service in a few hours...if that

Took my bike in for repairs on Monday only got it back it today, they had a notice at my LBS due to 94.7 they are extremely busy with services, usually at the same LBS i get my bike back within a day.

Lucky you did not take it in for a Shimano 105 wheel hub replacement, according to local importer it will take 6-12 months for delivery.

Its mainly because of the people who push in and say "ja bru, I know you're busy, but my job will take you like 10 minutes to do!"

It is easy to do a major service and get it out in the same day - parts dependent - which is another story, most shop owners do not want to hold a large stock of spares for ALL the variations available on the market, think chain rings - there are, lets say, 5 MTB groupsets from Shimano and 5 from Sram each using different chainrings and at least two per group, NOW take into account that both these companies have about 3 different gearing options for the rings - OK so that's a LOT of chainrings needed on hand - in case they are needed. Its now the same for most parts - rear derailleurs, front derailleurs etc.

Car servicing places (big dealerships) can hold stock of a lot of spares as most of it is on consignment and paid for when sold and replenished right away.

So take into account the 10 minute job - that actually winds up taking at least 30 min (about 4 per day) crew, the need to order spares (1-2days to receive from supplier) and if your bike needs a part or gets put aside for the push ins then that's what takes the time.

most LBS on have 1 full time mac, with another 2 guys that help out when they not busy on the shop floor...compared to the many employed by vehicle service agents.

This made a lot of sense to me.
