Riding your bike instead of racing it?

I have limited time to train so when Im on my roadie its full race mode all the time.

When I race I know Im not going to win but I ride as hard as I possibly can, for me races are about pushing myself.

If you are entering a race to just pootle about then why not skip the race and just ride the same route minus the crowds?

Then again I also enjoy a nice slow ride on my old cruiser looking at the scenery.

At the end of the day, the only person I race against is myself. As I have lost weight and got fitter my times (according to strava of course ;) ) have improved.  Getting that little PR gold medal for a long hill climb is a lekker feeling.

People have different goals and plans.

One wanna just chill and enjoy and the other one

wanna train to achieve their goal.

And everyone have different point of enjoyment(?)

For example I wanna push hard that make me happy.

It does mean I dont enjoy the weather and views. ;)

Whatever floats your boat (or spins your wheels).

As long as there's mutual respect.....ride it like you stole it. Some are just more anxious to get away from the cops than others! Me personally.....I get caught most of the time.

It could be the general tendency but I dont see the problem or why here is so much critisizm around racing. All of us are grownups and can choose how we would like to ride our bikes when we get the time. If somebody chooses to race balls to the wall and not look around and enjoy his ride, its his choice, his loss or whatever he thinks it it.

It should also be mentioned that how much you enjoy cycling is to a large extent dependent on your fitness and also your level of skill (mtb). If you go for chilled cruises all of the time, you will never get strong and will not be able to ride, nevermind enjoy longer, more demanding or technically difficult rides. Once again it boils down to preference.

It definitely isn't criticism, just a mere observation form my side.

Btw, there are definitely ways to get fit and strong without racing. I hauled a 50kg loaded bike for about 10000km in SE Asia...[emoji12] . That certainly gave me a workout

Well today I did the kiddies race (30km) mtb challenge.

I raced it.

On my singlespeed.

I rode like a champ.

I kicked some ass.

I digged it.

I never annoyed anyone.

So you won?

It always has been about just riding my bike BUT when you enter a event like Attakwas Extreme and you know what its about and have limited time due to life, you be friendly to fellow folk but train ur ass off

the proper term for cyclists who are like that is:

strav****holes (i would fill in the rest, but ive been making a lot of "opinionated" posts lately and im trying to get off admin's radar, which i assume im on   )

i wont lie, i kinda fall into this category of rider, at least on the downs, have no problem stopping and smelling the roses on the way on, unless its rhodes memorial, then its game on!

It might also be a time thing, if you only have 2 hours you have to have to choose whether you want to train or chill

I fall into that category. I like to train in the mornings, but as I have that place I go to fund my cycling, aka, a job, I know I have to up be before sunrise to get in a decent ride and still be at work at a reasonable time. Luckily I have an understanding boss. With 94.7 this coming weekend I've arranged to come in later this week on my non-rest days so I can get in decent time in the saddle, but I will still ride it like I stole it for the extra time I have.;)

Some people like to race. No idea why that should bother anyone. Do what you want. Do you think everyone should do exactly as you do and think as you think?

There must be a clever word for that belief.

And never forget. One bike is a ride, two bikes is a race.
