Guys and gals, we need to chill a bit here. It's easier to ban cyclists than walkers. I'm probably just as guilty of riding too fast sometimes, but two or three people walking, each with 2 or 3 unleashed dogs are a frigging menace, and use up half a hectare of space, never mind second guessing where the hounds are going to dart to. Then worrying about being bitten... I've had dogs charging me many times, and the owners usually only half call them off... it's their way of getting back at us I guess. But you never know if the dog is going for the kill .. or not. Can be scary.

But the bottom line is we need to be tolerant, because I think us cyclists are the ones who'll lose out if push comes to shove.

Maybe we should look at putting in dedicated cycle paths

Cycle paths would be a decent idea, but who's to say walkers and joggers would obey "Bikes only" signs?

Cmon people - she's having a littlego at cyclists. Let's not do the usual hub over reaction and get all uppity.

Anyone who thinks she will actually make true on her threats is a little dim.

As a side-thought...the Spruit is such a contrast to where I rode yesterday. A mate and I rented bikes from Bike & Bean yesterday and rode down the Durban Promenade. With the amount of near-misses with kids, dogs, joggers, skaters and bike riders around, it's refreshing not to hear any raised voices or see any aggression. I know it's not the same thing, but the attitude of the people is so much better than what happens on the Spruit.

+1 on that Tumbles - near misses will always be a part of dog/human/bike interaction. Exactly the same situation can results in "sorry sorry mate" or "those damn dogs/human/walkers - we must cut off their legs so they can't walk/ride anymore". All depends on the state of mind.

Flippin corny but "be the change you want to see in the world".

See very similar friendly interaction between cyclists, walkers and runners on the Sea Point Promenade.

Agreed, for the most part she's venting .

However it's not so much her, but the resulting commentary thereafter. Including that of our ward councillor who is being a little more instigating and hypocritical. There's a whole context to that discussion that's missed on this thread.

I'm on that forum as I live in the area and a number of people have tried to post proactive objective comments and solutions. However, when the ward councillor of the area is part of the stirring and makes comments of riders must rather go and intimidate taxis.

Then in the context of what happened to Burry, no I'm not over reacting, I'm holding someone to account who will be expecting my vote come election time.

Personally I feel there's no need for a hub topic about this as I don't see it going anywhere constructive.

The Sea Point promenade was closed to cyclists ever since it was built. All it took was for someone with VISION to see that "the times they have-a-changed" (sorry Bob Dylan). With a vote, and a stroke of a pen, the promenade was opened to cyclists for a trial period. That worked so well that it was opened permanently.

Lessons to learn?

1. When you mix walkers, joggers, gym bunnies, kiddies, geriatrics, dogs and riders, everyone need to chill (like in Slaapstad).

2. Those who simply cannot chill, should just go elsewhere (pitt bulls, strava addicts, grumpy arseholes, stupid local councillors)

Another downside of social media - 10 years ago she would have vented to her mates and nobody would have heard. Now its public dirty laundry.

I suppose it depends on your point of view. He also said "its only a few of them" - I would happily support getting "those few" that cause *** for the rest of us to go and play with taxis.

True, personally I've been using the Spruit greenbelt and Delta for years on a near daily basis on all fronts. Cycling, walking, dogs, running et al ... at varying times, and have hardly ever experienced anything anywhere near described by some.

More often than not people by and large are perfectly chilled with one another, but now the minority want to start issuing bans and what not.

Actually, he said it's the "majority" as well. So he's confused too it seems.

The fact is he is an elected official as such is subject to input and should be held to account when he shows a clear bias. Or do we only keep to that as a double standard for other partys.

No one has defended not getting rid of those stupid few, on all levels.

We were riding the spruit on Saturday morning. We came across the big Park run group, and they were very much of the opinion that we should not have even been near the spruit during "their time". We all kept to one side, trying to be out of the way, and there were plenty of grumpy comments. The normal dog walkers and joggers were actually pretty friendly.
