Cleat some help?

I've been riding eggbeaters for years and recently Candys. I like that the cleats are lower profile so you can walk on rocks and stuff more safely when portaging etc. I also like how they are much better in mud. The bearings do wear though and you have to use a rebuild kit every now and then.

However I stripped and rebuilt a friend's Shimano 520s recently. This base level pedal has rock solid build quality and after 3 years of hard riding and abuse a clean out, fresh grease and bearing adjustment had them spinning smoorhly again with no free play and no spares required. Impressed!

Nah, it's not impressive. You've just become used to the rock solid shoddiness of Crank Brothers and their products. There's a reason they're referred to as Crap Brothers..

Point taken but I will be sticking with my 'Crap Brothers' ☺. The advantage of the better cleats has me hooked.

It will crap itself soon and then you'll end up with the whole pedal stuck to your foot! Happened a mate who was actually warned by out lbs but went with it anyway cos it matched the colour of his bike...needless to say it was a crap ride down Rhodes Mem from the Blockhouse!

I still use the first set I ever bought.... 1990..... still going strong...

They're kinda like Nokia phones used to be, actually found a 5110 at home a week ago, still works!

Warren I've been using the same pair of eggbeaters since about 2005 and none of the problems you mentioned.

I maintain them properly.

The V; "Shimano cleats are also used on most spinning bikes... so you don't need extra pair shoes" that they are used on spinning bikes is not really a recommendation

Shamus "Those were bullet proof eggbeaters". Can I get a pair?

Slightly more seriously; I have stuck with Crank Bros, many of, and, by limited comparison, they do need more maintenance than Shimano SPD's and I find the repair kits are confusing BUT cleating in and out is easy & predictable, every time and in all weathers and service from the agents has been very good.

So are there any options to the butter-soft CB cleats? I go through these things like underpants, and they're not that cheap. Are they all soft brass or copper, or whatever they are?

Can one double like a post?

200% concur.

I've used Shimano, Eggbeaters, TIME, and others. IBeyond the first set of Eggbeaters I had in 2003, they have been reliable and light weight. The XTR PD970's I used for Epci 2008 are still trucking along smoothly. I love my TIME ATAC's though and am back on those because I prefer the size of the platform despite them being heaving than my EB's and similar in wweight to the XTR's

I'd be more concerned with the engagement being compfortable for you. the platform being supportive enough for you and servicability. Weight would not be a primary concern for me in this regard.

Just stay away from titanium axles. They are bearing killers for anyone over 75Kg

With Candy's the 1 and 2 series pedals use an outer ball-bearing and inner nylon bush. On the 3 series and top-of-range 11 series pedals they use the outer ball-bearing and an inner needle-roller. My LBS warned me that these needle roller bearings often spew bits of roller around the inside of the pedal when they fail and this damages other parts.

I was advised to go with the 2 series pedals - stronger materials of construction and with the more reliable bearing system seems to give best value if you go with CB pedals.
