John winning the Munga was not a surprise. Even so, there were tears of joy in our household when he crossed the finish line in first place hours ahead. My wife is responsible for managing the sponsorship of the 3 year old RMB Change a Life development team. Martin had explained his strategy of completing the race with minimal sleep (learned from his Freedom Challenge win) and how they would keep him awake through the nights.

The emotional text she received from John shortly after his win was testament to how sincere, humble and appreciative he is as a human being. It really couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

So who needs a 29er to win a 1000km MTB race anyway? Pyga Zero650 for the win! Well done John. You are an absolute legend.

Simply awesome! Well done to John and all involved in helping him win this race.

One of the drop outs, Bonga posted on FB,

"Good afternoon world hope you doing well, I was going strong and pushing hard till yesterday morning when I tore my nerve muscle and my left leg started swelling and it was painful then, I pulled out but I am fine expert the pains"

This was after 800km.

Already can't wait for next years event. Would love to think I would/could be on the start line, but I honestly think this is just too tough an event.

And at this point it's a good opportunity to say a hearty congratulations to all those involved in this event, and to those who made the start line.... A massive high five, whether you finished or not.

Bring on Munga 2016!

The first group of back markers have arrived at Tankwa they have pulled a gap of 25kms on the last group. They really have done well up to now they must be so tempted to rest up here. The stats suggest that it is possible as today they have finished just under 140km in 10 hrs they still have 146km to go which suggests another 11 hours of riding so maybe they catch 5 hrs of R&R and leave at midnight. Or alternatively push for RV5 and leave at 5:00 am tomorrow as it seems like a quick run in PK did it in 4 hrs,

Man imagine doing these calcs with a tired body and mind.

I think people severely underestimate what effect fatigue has on a person's ability to think coherently.

I know its not comparable but when I have had heavy software rollouts in the past we lived on 2-3 hours of sleep a night for a week. Sure it wasnt heavily physical but it was heavy mental work and just trying to do simple things during that time is crazy difficult.

There are effectively 4 groups out there I wonder if someone takes up the role of leader or is it run as a democracy?

I'm hoping Gerald Cele latches on to one of the groups as he has really struggled over the last couple of hours.

This is one of the most interesting mtb events EVER! I know a lot of us would like more coverage and more information along the way. But I feel it would take away some of the toughness - it would be like those guys trying to survive in the jungle, but there are a camera man filming it. Part of the toughness for the guys in front are you are alone no one around - you yourself and your mind playing games. Not only physical strength but mental to.
