Was agreeing with you re XT not working and reiterating that a long cage Ultegra or 105 will work depending on your gearing.

Great thanks for the confirmation.

Have you considered Sram shifters and derailleur?

Their road shifters and MTB derailleurs have the same pull ratio so you can run a medium cage clutch RD with road shifters. It works seamlessly.

Only reason I went Sram.

Agree with Eddy, that's why I went SRAM - you can throw on an XO ten speed rear mtb derailleur and forget about it... it works perfectly

Exactly.

And as everyone is going 11 speed mad, you can pick up a good XO 10 speed RD and a set of Red 10 speed shifters off the hub.

TRP brakes and you are sorted.....

no I have not considered it, I'm slapping this build together with majority of parts already lying around in the garage.

the internet says 9sp rear shimano derailleur will work with 10sp shimano brifters. (hate that word, better than STI though)

This works. A buddy fitted it for me and I rode the Tour de PPA with it yesterday. 10spd STI (sorry) and 9spd RD.

Ladies & Gentleman, as my nearly 2 year old son would say "taaa-daaa", I present to you the monstercross (MX?)

Minor things to sort out, new chain & cassette and the rears derailleur as mentioned earlier in this thread. Hopefully take it off road this weekend still!!! Can't wait!!!

Concerns STI's doesn't offer enough leverage in the breaking department, will have to look into that later as well as just upgrade to lighter parts as we go along. This bike was slapped together with 90% of parts lying around in the garage.

Looks nice. What brakes are you using?

I find the braking to be different but sufficient when riding district roads and tar .... even for the odd non technical singletrack and have gotten used to it.

'proper' technical stuff is not that easy but it has more to do with the the hand positions available .... on the tops of the bars and you can't reach the brakes and in the drops by brakes it feels like you are gonna neuk over the damn bars all the time.

But I still love this bike, despite all the naysayers saying it will just hang in my garage I just this passed weekend did an 84k Sat and 91k Sun of mixed dirt/gravel/tar riding with it

Looks good.

I anticipate you'll need a shorter stem. You've got the right idea by raising it considerably. A MTB tube top is longer than a normal bike that runs drops. To get a comfortable position on the hoods or in the drops you'll run a shorter stem in comparison. Interested to see your opinion after a few rides.
