Have been running a 1x10 setup on all my bikes for some time and really enjoy it ... this is riding a lot of the tails in the WC

My setup on my enduro bike is 30F x 11-43R and have not had any issues climbing anything ...

for my JHB bike im running a a different setup as in the picture ... 1x10 ... 34F x 11-40R , but i have also added a 24 granny gear that i will manually shift if i need to.

I tend to do the "Cheat" on stage races like wine2whales (that Hamilton Russel climb kills me every year no matter how fit i am) so for that ill manually switch to the 24 in front.

Hope this helps .... I see the granny as a get out of jail gear .... and only use it in extreme cases... its called INDEX SHIFTING .... as in index finger . lol

Out of interest sake what kind of speeds do you guys get with your 1X10 setups?

I have to maintain about 9km/h on the low side while going up and peddle at about 40km/h on the high side on the flats. This is for comfortable peddling I spin out at about 45km/h on down hill.

Please mention the gear/wheel size:

29er

34T front

11-36 rear

175mm crank arms

On my 29er, 11-36 with 32t im spinning out at about 40/41 on a downhill. You should be good getting up to 45 with the 34t imo

Thanks,

Any Idea on the low end? 9km/h on those looong hills can get to me.

So, essentially a 2X10, but with no FD?

You can definitely go slower than that on the hills, and you'll get faster the stronger you get.

Edited my previous post as I checked again today. Can easily hit 40kph on the FLATS without spinning out but that's about where I spin out on the downhills.

How do you calculate correct chainlenght for 1x9 setup?

Same as you would if you were running 2 or  3 chainrings up front...

Wrap the new chain around the largest cog on the cassette and the largest chainring (for 1 x 9 you only have one to choose from  ;)). Bring the ends of the chain together then add a link or two depending on your bikes chain growth as it runs through its travel (if it is a dual sus).
