Is going 1x10 really worth it?!?

Question: my 1x10 runs quiet and smooth until I hit some mud and then it clunks and creaks and grinds like crazy! Usually run up and down the gears to try and clear it but no luck and then for the rest of the ride it sounds terrible and feels almost out of sync.

Set the chain length as normal with +2 links and have set the chainring with a 2.5mm washer for alignment. Setup is 32T, 11-42 with XT GS Shadow+, clutch off.

Any ideas?

Any reason why you're running the clutch off? Do you have a long or medium cage?

GS medium cage RD and I run the clutch off as I have a chainguide and it just allows a bit more flex for the 42T and takes a bit of tension out of the shifter.

Aah, okay. Your issue doesn't make sense though. When I did my set up, I didn't use any spacers, have the same set up as yours. Not a cable issue perhaps?

My clutch is always on and the shift to the 42 is extremely smooth.

Been reading all these post and probably going to sound stupid now...

But I'm currently on a 3x10 XT on my Silverback Sprada 1 and I'm considering going for a 2x10 XT....

Now, I need advice from the more experienced riders please? What are my best options?

38/24 or something else.

I'm not quite there yet to go for the 1x10 setup... (But working my way there)

Yes your XT 3x10 is perfect now - why mess with it???

So when your budget and legs allow it (never gonna happen until you do) go for a proper 1x10 because you have 90% of what you need to properly do it...

XT cassette, XT crank, XT Derailleur - all nice stuff and convertible to the 1x10 setup.

buy a NW front ring and a rear 42T or 40T conversion and 16T cassette sprocket and convert.

Don't waste going to 2x you are really not gaining anything.

Excellent advice. You lose so much with a 2 x 10. When I ran a 3x10, I used the middle(34) most of the time. When I changed to a 2x10 I found myself using the granny gear as I couldn't do the 38.

Very dependant on the riding or terrain you cover as well.

I have no issues shifting but still have this horrible noisy grinding after it's been through mud, which is a lot at the moment! Feels a bit like the chain is not seating right on the chainring or cassette?

Im running it at the moment. 2 x 10 with the conversion casette. Just as a tester. Put in the 40T and removed the 17t in an XTR casette. Thats all well and good but the jump from a 15 to a 19 is very s@#t. So the newnthing is removing the 15 and putting in a 16t. Havnt tried that but the costs are ramping up fast. So im going to stick to 2 x 10. In fact I got the new 2 x 11 XTR. Havnt tested it yet waiting for the f%÷×@&/=g crank shimano....

Xx1 was an option I considered. But at R5000 for a casette and 4800 for a rear derailer no chance.

Had a few weekends now riding at Heia with my 1x10 setup... just loving it. I've found it's a little tricky to get the rear derailleur tuned properly but once you have it shifting nicely it's just a pleasure!

Go 1 x and then when the chainring wears out, decide if you want to keep that setup. It's the only way to see what you are really capable of pedaling.

I'm loving 1x10. Have had it for 6 months. Did K2C, Origin of Trails and W2W on it.

32T up front

11-36T cassette with 40T

XT clutch derailleur with med cage

XTR shifter

All works perfectly. I do go through a chain a month or every 900km though. Cassette lasts between 2000-3000km

I do average MTB rides of 50km/1500m - Western Cape has no flats :)

1x10 will make you stronger. Only recommend for fitter riders.

Top speed: 42kph before spinning out
