What is it with people riding stuff straight on the spruit.

Who the hell cares anyway?

The Spruit isn't real mountain biking anyway.

A real trail isn't a place where a 75 year old lady, with two artificial hips, can walk Fluffy, her French Poodle.

I know this has been mentioned before in other posts, but I have a much bigger issue with riders going the wrong way on jump lines like Hurlingham and Bundaburg.

There is no way I can see a rider coming up the Hurlingham jump line, and I still haven't mastered the skill of slowing down while airborne.

The first jump of Bundaburg is also quite sketchy, especially when the grass is long. ( Did my first whip this weekend trying to avoid a rider going through the dip.)

I agree with previous posts: Gaps! If someone cannot ride through a ditch , they cannot go up the wrong way.

Which way is the right way on a cummuting path in a public area?

I have figured it out!.  It is food.  Food is the real problem.  To much plastic packaging and to many hormones in the meat.  It releases to much estrogen in your blood and those makes your balls shrink.  That  in turn makes you scared to ride anything resembling a berm, pebble, jump or a switchback.  So there you have a really good scientific explanation of why people don't ride technical stuff.

I ride the spruit with my brother in law a few mornings a week. He and I stick to the established lines. But both of us have noticed corners being cut on some of the best parts. There's a nice sweeping bit of single track just after tana with a number of turns around some trees and recently I noticed a very obvious straight route developing. Frankly this pisses me off since I really enjoying this section and once a straight route starts to develop a lot more people will start opting for the "faster line". Its frustrating since I slow down to make the corners and I've been working on my cornering technique so I can move faster through the turns. And its working, I can now corner pretty quick. But if you can't make a turn when did it become okay to just destroy the trail? When are we going to start valuing technical skill and cornering ability over average speed. Anyone can raise their average speed by breaking the trail but then we end up with a dumb straight dirt road. And frankly we have enough of those.

Why should you or anyone else care if people want to go straight instead of taking the turns?  If you want to turn then do so, no one is forcing you go straight

Have to agree with Ryan, spruit is awesome.

HOWEVER in the spirit of the hub and the fact that its Friday I have to point out that there are more blowhards per square mile on the spruit every weekend that anywhere else in Jozi.

Hate on and have a happy weekend

Ben, next time, stop put a few rocks, branches etc across the new line... Im sure the people dumbing it down don't know how to bunny hop (or even pronk for that matter.) so that will deter the straight liners, and preserve the fun lines.

Cr*p advise. Next you hear is someone retaliates by putting barbed wire across the trail at neck height. OP should learn to go straight at speed like the rest of manne!

Thing is, I have never seen any "commuters" going up the wrong way. Only "insurance company sponsored" riders on 80k specialized epics.

You really have to go out of your way to go up the wrong way at Hurlingham, as there is a four lane highway right next to the jump line.

And finally: Whether it is public land is a moot point: Mountain biking started on public land, and some of the greatest trails on the planet are still on public land.

Maintaining a line by blocking off the newly created sissy line, is different than trying to kill people with barbed wire....

But I guess it is friday so, troll on!

Edit:  Oh, and this is the exact method they use at the "paid" trails to stop the stavanoughts dumbing down their trails...

For us on the otherside of the country, with little to no real ownership in the spruit, could we see pics of these areas .... you know, so that we can feel included in the discussion.

Not trolling, just interested to get a visual of what is happening on those trails.

I do not have any pictures but:

Picture the Seapoint boulevard with the odd "hilly" section where a bunch of guys or more accurately one guy & two helpers built some pretty cool features ( off the main line) . This is within pedaling distance of loads and loads of riders living in Joburg.

The problem is that some of the riders are Strava junkies who have no respect for anybody else using these trails. ( Walkers, commuters and mtb'rs who jump). They are training to get into group B at the next Trailseeker race, and do not have time for mere mortals who are just there for fun.

So to put it into CT context: We are unhappy about those guys riding up Snakes or the DH trails a Tokai. ( And then act all self righteous if you lose your cool)

About as self righteous as the guys who think they OWN the trails in a servatude..?

The difference again is you pay to ride there dont you?

Im not saying any side is right or wrong i just think its a bit silly trying to expect the public to abide by rules that a handful of people made up to suit themselves... granted it makes the trail better, but it certainly doesnt suit everyone?

Let's put this in context: The ocean is a pretty big place, but if you drop into another guy's wave, you end up with a broken nose. A handful of people made up the rules, but everybody is happy to abide by it. And no one pays for the wave, do they?

Trail etiquette does not only apply to trail centers.
